Default Bayou 220 bevel gear play

I am working on a 1995 Bayou 220. I have a question for someone who has
been into these machines before. After removing the Front Bevel case,
and cleaning up the inside area, I noticed that the bevel gear (15 toooth
gear) that attaches to a shaft that goes into the tranny has about
1/2 to 3/4 inches of play or movement to it before it engages inside
gears. IS this a normal amount of play or should it be without any play?
Please provide advise. Thanks

My experience with transmission play is with my P400. It doens't have the same type of transmission that yours does so it may not apply, but my transmission has play between the gear dogs and secondary gears inside the transmission. I always wondered why there was slop in there. I always (wrongly) assumed that it was combined lash between the two rear-ends and my final drive output case.

The gear dogs have pegs that are maybe 8mm in size that shoot into 13mm sized holes in the secondary gear sets. Each gear (high/low and reverse) has about the same amount of play in it so I'm assuming it's designed in to give the transmission some free play to engage into gear easier? I'm not really sure of their intent on the slop inside the tranny, but it's certainly present inside my unit.
