If you do a lot of touring, the Meanie is not the bike for you. You CAN set it up with a shield and bags, if you want to spend some dough. But make sure they are all readily removable so you can convert it back to the long, low, sleek look you fell in love with, just like the factory intended you to.

Boy, I'd forgotten to check this thread for a few days. Lots of comments here!

Dawn, I think you're right. It's great that you and Annie have both bikes. You can load up your bike pretty good with luggage. For my bike I have saddle bags, a bag that mounts on the sissy bar and sits on the rack, and another tall bag with a roll that I put on the passenger seat and attach to my driver backrest. I should have plenty of room for everything I need for an extended ride.

Basically, I like my 1500. But I need to do some work on the seat (I'm still waiting for my raw gel), need to power it up a bit (with a Power Commander), change out the pipes, etc. I'd sure love to have some alloy wheels, too. But I can't afford most of that stuff this year. I'll just have to be patient.

Good advice, Steve. I'd hate to ruin a Meanie's looks with a bunch of luggage.

I am having a tough time deciding on the right back rest, sissy bar and luggage for my Meanie... I need it by the 23rd of June for the Utah trip!

Actually, if you have (or can devise) detachable luggage & shield, you will then be able to convert it back to the originally intended power/muscle cruiser look until you need to tour again. Why not make it a dual purpose machine? Yamaha did that with their Royal Star Tour Deluxe. It is a nice idea. With the price of bikes nowadays, they should be able to do more than one thing!
