I relocated my license plate over the weekend. I'll post pictures as soon as I find my camera... misplaced it somehow.
The procedure was very simple. No kits, no extra parts. I took the license plate light and the red reflector out, and mounted moved the license plate bracket from the bottom to where the light used to be. The holes fit perfectly, and I was able to use the bolts that used to hold the plastic cover inside the fender (I simply switched the bolts that used to hold the plastic cover and bolts that used to hold the bracket). Now my license plate frame starts about an inch to an inch and a half below the fender. Looks pretty good. I am missing the license plate light now, so I am thinking of getting an illuminated frame from cruisercustomizing, or maybe this one. I'm sort of partial to Kuryakyn Will post pictures soon; so far I think the 30-minute effort was worth it, although I am now illigal (sans license plate light). |

I was thinking of drilling 2 extra holes in the plate, each about 3/4" directly above the holes at the bottom of the plate. Those would line up with the bracket slots and would place the top of the plate just below the taillight, covering up the reflector in the process. You would still be legal, unless your state bars you from such alteration to a plate. NH does not. The plate just hangs down way too far low for my tastes. You run over something & goodbye plate.

I meant illegal because it's not illuminated, not because of relocation. Where the heck did that camera go?! My wife is trying to convince me I took it last time, but I know it's them gremlins lurking about....

Here we go, pics. Finally found my camera, sorry for the delay. Remember, no extra parts, no relocation kits. Just moving the bracket up in place of the light. It's a little crooked, I need to adjust it slightly, but you get the idea.

Looks nice, Deniska. Be sure to give an update on what you decide for the light. I've been wanting to do the exact same mod and couldn't justify the $200 or whatever it was for the Cobra relocation kit. Do you plan on cutting away the bit of plastic that's showing below your plate?

You guys inspired me to chop my fender and relocate my license plate. I was going to buy the aeromach clean kit and turn signal relocation kit for about $200, but I decided to save the money for pipes and a power commander.
After unbolting and removing the piece of plastic that covers the wiring underneath the fender, I started removing things. I removed the license plate bracket, the reflector, and the license plate light. The light's wiring just unplugs from a socket, so there was no messy cutting of wires. After I got that stuff out of the way, I just trimmed plastic with my power saw, leaving the holes that the license plate light mounted on. That is where I mounted my license plate bracket. Now I don't have a license plate light, but I can just buy a nice chrome frame that has a light on it. Check out the pics. I'm pretty happy with how it came out.

Man, I can't believe how much nicer that looks. They're calling for rain in my parts this weekend, so I think I know what I'll be doing to fill the time.

I just removed the Lic. light and cut a notch in the bottom of the Light. Moved the plate up and used the bottom holes. Another cure is to cut and roll over the top edge. Both work well, little labor, and zero bucks! Ron

That does look good deniska. I made an bent aluminum checkered plate tag mount for a side mount & removed everything from the rear fender.
