Default I need a low mileage used engine or help form an honest dealer. I've been done wrong.

I have a cherry vn740 withe 7k miles and a single cylendar is stuck. It's a 94 TEAL beauty. I don't want another bike.
Problem is, dealer service manager clearly doesn't want to work on it.
I brought it in to clear up some valve noise heard while idling last summer, and asked why it was using oil. He said the engine wasn't even broke in yet. He said drive the "urine" out if it and bring it back in the fall. 400 miles later, no more oil usage. Hurray. 150 miles later the engine stopped. Left rear spark plug was toasted and almost no oil left.
The next morning the bike started normally and ran at idle for 6 seconds.
Then the cylender seized.
The dealer says 1400 just to look at it and no guarentee it won't cost 4k plus.
Service manager says, Buy a "new bike". I say no. He says buy a new engine then. He says it will cost nearly the cost of a "new bike". Then his vulcan expert said it will cost 4k for the brand new motor from Kawasaki and 2k to install. THEY sent me to Parts who said KAWASAKI doesn't even sell new vn750 engines. There ought to be some censureship for a dealer who won't perform maintenance you need when your next in line. This is a multibrand dealer and the vn750 expert is also the Honda Goldwing Expert. It's not economical for them to help ME unless it's snowing............ Recommend me an honest dealer who wants to see happy customers with bikes on the road, in the summer time, and at reasonable prices. Shoot, the cylendar's are sleeved. New Parts will cost $200 per cylendar. Thanks, from SW Missouri

I think it's the cylendar because the starter wont turn the engine over at all though it really tries AND when in first gear and the engine off you cant roll it more than 6 inches in either direction. With the plugs out and Mystery oil shot in the plug holes, you can hear the sucking sound made by moving pistons, or piston, but they or it moves move only just a bit. The movement is enough so the mystery oil shoots out the front cylender spark plug sockets when I try to roll the bike, but not the back.

You started it up with almost no oil in it??? Search for a used motorcycle parts supplier and pick up a used engine or look for one on ebay.

Yes it was dumb. It was early ans I was just sick. I thought the oil probllem was solved and that the problem was due ti the reinstoem and moisture in the carbs. Ebay has nothing. There are no mentions of engiones available anywhere. One Junk dealer with 1k bikes in his yard has had only ONE vn750, ever. It was a 1993 thet was junked because the cams were damaged last year. He and the owner looked for months with no luck, using all available resources. It's funny, but he thinks the VN 750 is is not a very popular bike......... I wonder where they all go?

I have been looking since last summer, E-bay, Junk yards, Internet. It's "just wrong".

Check out "Road Track and Trail" in Wisconsin. Go to www.CycleTrader.com and do a dealer search. This place has hundreds and hundreds of used bikes. They always have a handful of VN750's in stock it seems...the motor are the same regardless of the year I believe. When I was searching for used bikes, they always had low mileage VN750's for pretty good prices. If you want to keep your bike so desperately, buy a complete used one for around $2k and swap motors and you'll still have a clean parts bike on hand for any other needs that might pop up. Probably about your only choice unless you get very lucky. Either way, it's going to cost you money so you'd better be really commited to that bike. For under $6k, you can get a new VN750...your gonna probably spend $3k on this current bike and you'll never recoupe any of it, nor can you guarantee success, even after spending the money. You've already missed a lot of riding time, how much is it all worth?

And even an honest dealer can't guarantee it will be a cheap fix until they open her up first.

You can try and retry www.bent-bike.com

they are a local bike wrecking and salvage yard. I just checked their inventory of listed motors but give them a call. Keep checking back. Search the net for motorcycle salvage stuff like that

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=motorcycle+salvage

here is a google search

I would pull it down and have a quick look. Possibly dropped a valve or stuck rocker or something. I am not familiar with that engine, but would pull at least the heads off ,so you can see what you need. If you are not mechanically inclined at all, find a general do it all type of back yard shop that will help you see whats the problem ,..without costing a ton to at least find out. You may only need to order 300 $ worth of parts?

If you have a college nearby that has a machine shop you might be able to see if they will do your engine as a project and pay for parts. Just a thought.

Find a used engine if it's needed and there should be plenty available across the US. Tear it down (get someone to assist if you need help...maybe find a shade tree MC guy...) and find the problem first though. It might not need a "new motor". BTW, Kawasaki does not (generally) sell new motors...they sell parts=expensive. Also, low/no oil=bad. You might follow the trouble shooting advice in your MOM if you've got one...

Rule 1. Dealers are expensive.

The Vulcan 750 normally lasts forever, that is why you don't see many at salvage yards. Plus it seems the 800A and 800B are more popular. Does it really cost 2-3000 thousand to rebuild a motor? Wow, on a 11 year old bike it might be worth it to look for a good used one.

At this point you got nothing to lose but riding time....get a good shop manual and tear the thing apart!! I'd go nuts walking by it in the garage....I'd either have to take a sledge hammer to it or a wrench, and the wrench is probably the better idea!

They have them here, too. Very good suggestions, Cary and John.

I would just buy a used 750 and part your bike out on ebay. You might even break even.

That quote seems awfully high. The voteceh schools are a great idea also. Good Luck!
