Default 5000 on a rear tire and time to change?

I just came back from a 750 mile ride and noticed my rear tire is about done. I have put 5100 miles on since January and the center tread is about gone. I was hoping to get a little more than that but it probably has to do with riding two up a lot. My mechanic suggests replacing the back with OEM equipment and then going with Metzlers next year when I replace both tires. Wearing out a rear tire every 5000 is going to get a bit expensive.

Welcome to my pain! With you 100%. These Dunlop's stick great BUT wear down quickly. I'm thinking about Michelin Mac 90's ... Any comments about the Mac's anyone?

There are a lot of folks with considerable knowledge about this kind of biking stuff on this forum. Sooooooo, would some of you more knowledgable folks give us the scoop, or at least your 2 cents worth, on which tires (brands, size, types) are best for the different types of bikes (sport or cruiser) and riding (solo or 2 up)?

Check your air pressure. I've got almost 7000 on the stock stones and they still look good. Most of that is 2up riding.

Trust me bro .... These DUN's don't last .... Too many people on here are reporting similar mileage along with the dealer smiling and stating "that's normal" wear and mileage.

Would think for the MS there has got to be a better solution. I check pressure at least weekly and keep the pressure at 40R 38F. The pressure does hold and occasionaly I have to add 1/2 pound or so. Hard riding seems to force some air out.

The bridgestone BT020 averages 8K+ according to rocket riders so I wonder how well this tire will do on the streak.

I know it varies but what was your ball-park amount for a rear-change at the dealer? If you don't mind me asking.

Well, Dunlops will not be on my short list for sure. Riders on VROC are saying the Metzler ME880 is the one to go with.

Just saw a discussion on VROC about the Dunlops where riders are getting around 17000 on a set of Elite 3's.

Your right Blue ,but I don't think they make the size we need for the 800 ( they might make a back one )

Couple of things to ponder here.

I really don't care for the Dunlops. When they are new, they stick great but after a few thousand miles they don't grab worth a flip. They are one of the highest milage tires you will find. The rubber is a harder compound than the Metzlers and Avons. Also depends on your riding style.

I think the Avon Venoms are great tires. Even if they do wear a little faster they have great traction all the way to the end. If I only have 2 wheels under me, I'd rather spend the extra dough a little more often than worry about my tires wearing out or giving me adequate traction.

I got about 9200 on the stock Stones before switching to Michelin Commanders and currently have about 4400 miles on them and they appear to be wearing well. I keep the tire pressure on the rear tire at 40 psi and 38 psi on the front tire. I do a little 2 up riding with the wife but not like CP does so am sure the wear would be more dramatic with constant 2 up riding.

Hey blue,
I got 8000 on my 800 classic before the handling went away. The 1600 Nomad is a lot heavier and the tire seems softer and I have kept the air pressure at 40 PSI since I bought it. My mechanic told me the G722 is only used on the 1600 Nomad this year. It is a slightly different tire than on the 800. One thing that is nice about the tire is the handling hasnt gone away at all. The tire on the 800 started pulling me around on rougher surfaces but lasted longer.

My mechanic is going to replace the rear tire complete for 171.00 with mounting. He is going to mount it for free. He just started a Ducati dealership and is trying to win me over. I dont think Ducati makes a cruiser.
