I thought I'd save some money by making my own power adapter cable for my GPS. Mounted and wired a Powerlet powerbar on the bike and wired a Powerlet plug to a mini-usb connector for the GPS. I completely forgot that the USB port is 5v and proceed to blow my GPS when I plugged it into the bike.
What really frosts me is that a few years ago, I wouldn't have made this mistake.
Powerlet makes an adapter cable that regulates the 12V down to 5V and I now have one on order.

Had I not already installed the Powerlet system, I could have used this port. The Powerlet PowerBar was an attractive option because it's a chrome receptacle that is designed to clamp on the handlebars and it has a spring-loaded cap to keep the rain water out when nothing is plugged in.
Thanks for the suggestion.
I hate when that happens, hopefully you can return it? Say its ummm... faulty.
I got my direct voltage reducer from these guys
