Angry OOPS! Don't repeat my mistake

I thought I'd save some money by making my own power adapter cable for my GPS. Mounted and wired a Powerlet powerbar on the bike and wired a Powerlet plug to a mini-usb connector for the GPS. I completely forgot that the USB port is 5v and proceed to blow my GPS when I plugged it into the bike.

What really frosts me is that a few years ago, I wouldn't have made this mistake.

Powerlet makes an adapter cable that regulates the 12V down to 5V and I now have one on order.

Had I not already installed the Powerlet system, I could have used this port. The Powerlet PowerBar was an attractive option because it's a chrome receptacle that is designed to clamp on the handlebars and it has a spring-loaded cap to keep the rain water out when nothing is plugged in.

    Thanks for the suggestion.

I'm going to plead ignorance and try to get it fixed under warranty.

This would have been perfect. Since the Powerlet cable is already on its way I'll keep this in mind for future use. Thanks for the info.
