The sidewall pressure rating is the maximum COLD INFLATION pressure for the tire. If it's 51psi in the hot sun, the tire manufacturer has taken this into account.

Some tires need to be jacked to 80psi or higher to seat the bead... it's not going to explode on you. with a cold inflation at 42psi.
I'm not worried about it blowing, the higher pressure eats your middle tread away a lot faster.

Nahh... Texas and Florida eat your middle tread away

Seriously though... lower inflation results in more tread and sidewall flex, which results in increased heat generation. That results in both greater potential for tire failure (tread separation, belt damage), and increased treadwear... plus the rear tire will cup much more quickly.

If you ride 2-up, I strongly recommend running at the full pressure indicated on the sidewall.

Most riders (of many different brands) run much greater pressure than the manual. The manufacturer takes into account what they believe to be be the best "ride" conditions. Nearly everyone that has owned multiple bikes and purchased multiple sets of tires will tell you that the factory numbers are WAY TOO LOW. Running lower pressure rusults in accelerated wear and cupping. The best all around number for longivity, performance and ride seems to be somewhere around 40. We ran 40/40 in both our Kaws and I run 42/42 in my ST and my wife runs 40/40.
Does it really make a difference? Absolutely! You will greatly extend tire life and reduce cupping if you add a few pounds.
