Default Hypothetical Quetion

I have a question for the brainiac's on this forum; If you're going 80mph into a 30mph headwind, would this feel the same as 110mph on a calm day? Physic's was never my strong subject, so I don't know how to compute something like this.
Just wondering....

Yup.

I've been in headwinds that had some of the 750s and 1100s in the group in 3rd gear pinned and they couldn't maintain 55mph.... while I was pinned in 5th barely holding 80 and getting 25mpg.

Yep, and if you go with 30mph wind from the back it will feel like going 50 mph in a calm day

That's a good question. I vote with Rich.

You don't make much progress against strong headwinds, and it makes you tired to boot!

I tell ya... it's really spooky when you're rolling 80, then catch up with a semi trailer and while you're in the slipstream passing the truck, it is DEAD CALM!

Of course, then the bow wake from the cab SLAMS you.

I've been riding since 1968, and I don't think I've ever had the wind at my back...ever.

Lol, that is a weird feeling, like the calm before the storm I must be getting old, for about 10 seconds yesterday I thought a windshield would be kind of nice, nah, I aint there yet,

Yup...speed is relative. Relative to you, it feels like you're running 110.

Relative to the bike...you're going 0 mph. Hop on a plane going 300 mph and throw a baseball forward at 80 mph and the ball is traveling at 380 mph relative to the ground. Fun stuff

Bubba, that must be some of that new math. I figured you would have to quickly throw that ball rearward down the isle between the seats before the Federal marshall took you out.

The original post probably got a couple of the pilots in our group looking to review the directions on their old E6B computers.

You always have to spoil the fun with some kind of relativity comment... don't you? just kidding

So... back to windshields, you know that warning that says you shouldn't go above 80 or it'll fly off and seriously injure or kill you... does that mean you shouldn't go over 50 if you're going into a 30 mph wind?

Rich... what do you mean pinned... WOT in 3rd trying to maintain 50, are you talking about sport bikes?

I know exactly the calm you speak of when passing a semi. Also if you feel more buffeting than usual and haven't changed direction... check around I bet you there is an SUV somehwere close in front of you. Those things chop that air up really nasty.

Hmmmm...true...forgot about all that new age safety stuff from the 9/11 aftermath...

Though I'm sure no one would object if, say, Obama were to throw a ball forward on Air Force One...

Think he can throw 80 mph?

Honda and Yamaha 750 and 1100cc cruisers.
If they went to 4th gear they slowed down.

Like I said... I was WOT in 5th and barely holding 80. Ordinarily, WOT in 5th and I'll be passing 100 in a few seconds.

Believe it or not, in another life when I was younger and crazier, we did this stunt with bowling balls on an interstate. Running 80+, passenger leans out, lets a ball go, and we try to catch up with it. I know, I know, stupid and dangerous. [Don't try this at home kids] But it was midnight on an interstate in the midwest with no other cars around. [Hope the statute of limitations is up...]
