As for this point, anyone talking about Texas seceeding is just being silly, it will never happen. However, what is happening is that states are starting to assert their sovereinty rights under the 10th ammendment. You can check on legislation for your state here: State Sovereignty Resolutions*|*Tenth Amendment Center

The thought is that we might be able to prevent huge, big-government programs from being implemented in individual states that are against said legislation because the constitution doesn't give the federal govt the right to implement the legislation.

"The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people."

This might also help us throw out any federal legislation that forbids us from riding motorcycles because they are too dangerous. (I throw that out there so that the administrator gods won't move this thread to the dustbin of "off-topic" postings!).

As for Obama and "articulate speeches", I would say Obama is NOT a great "speaker", he IS a great "reader". A great speaker has to actually know what he is talking about instead of just reading what is on a teleprompter. Have you ever seen him in a town hall, he's just terrible IMO.
Representative in the Congressional branch. Actually a Federal Republic, sliding quickly to Socialist.

I have not given Obama much time, as I was not impressed by either candidate. The few speeches I have seen he reminds me of another Bill Clinton (A great public speaker).

Makes sense as individual states should be able to challenge the US Gov't on these issues.

Seems all these initiatives from O are pretty much for the Dems or the Dem states. I heard this morning his approval rating dipped below 50%. How quickly they slip in 6 months.

And that, my friends, is where it all falls apart. 99.9 percent of voters never, ever write a politician, whether it's their state/provincial/federal representatives or the members on their local municipal council. Pity. It's why we are where we are.

The reason this gets mentioned every now and again has to do with Texas history. Lots of people seem to know that Texas has the "right" to split into up to 5 states. What I was taught in Texas history (- and you have to remember this was actually back when they taught history and not the revisionist stuff they teach now -) was that when the War of Northern Aggression (what some call the Civil War) was over all the Southern States were required to sign a "promise" they would never seceed again. Texas told them they could take their piece of paper and shove it. It was never signed and thus Texas never gave up that "right". Now, I don't know if that is what the history books say anymore because I haven't looked lately.

Interesting, I never knew that. I used to live in South Carolina and know it to be a rebellious state but now realize Texas is as well.

Probably easier to secede now since Lincoln can't move the troops down, Obama has them all in Afghanistan.

    +1

And how many that do write their letter get read by the representative? Or passed off to a staffer to send a canned letter.

Oh, don't worry. If enough letters go in that say, "do this (pass stupid legislation) and me and my family will do this (never vote for you again), you'll get their attention.

We've proved it here in Ontario on a few occasions. For example, a few years back the provincial Health Authorities (HA) in this corner of the province sent letters to all the churches saying that they could no longer hold church suppers unless the food was cooked in kitchens that had been approved by the HAs. Needless to say, this would have meant the demise of chrch supers because all the food is home-cooked. We (Ontario Landowners' Association) typed up form letters and, with the agreement and co-operation of ministers, priests, elders, etc., had the letters distributed among the parishes. The letters in essence said this: "you go ahead with this nonsense, and your political career is done!"

End result? Within 10 days the provincial government issued a directive to all Health Authorities in the province that church suppers were exempt from the nonsense.

    Yup, it works.

Maybe Canadians will take less guff. Here in America most are Sheeple and rather than speak up on issues they disagree with they bend over and take it.

I think the current health care legislation issue is a great example as to how we can have an influence. People have been going nuts since we started finding out some of the details of the proposed plan, and have been assaulting their reps with a flurry of emails, calls, blogs, etc. There have been town halls where people who now know more than their reps on the issue (who don't seem to understand they should actually read the bill), have been hammering them with questions that the reps can't answer. This has really gotten their attention, which is why the vote has been stopped this week. Let's keep it up, so they don't take away one of our ever-decreasing freedoms.
