I was outside in the garage heating a nut on the vice with MAP gas last night. About 4 seconds into it the gas just exploded out the top. I don't know if it was a leak or a bad valve or what it was but the top just blew. So here I am holding this flaming bottle, trying to figure out what to do with it in a split second and just tossed it into the center of the garage. Luckily I keep a fire extinguisher in the garage and was able to run over and grab it and get the fire out before it got too bad. The garage was covered in a yellowish dust from the fire extinguisher but at least I'm ok and nothing was damaged. I think I'm going to grab 2 new fire extinguishers and keep one on both sides of the garage from now on.
Next time I use a flame I'll have the fire extinguisher right by my side. Where I ended up tossing the bottle was right in my way of exit, smart huh? I had to jump over the flaming bottle to get to the fire extinguisher or even the exit. |

Get that yellow dust cleaned up ASAP with a shop-vac with a GOOD filter... it is highly corrosive... you don't want it on your bike or the bike's or garage wiring.
Glad it wasn't any worse. And yes... any time I am welding or burning propane/map, even on my clay tile patio, I have two ABC extinguishers at arm's length.

Good luck at getting that.
You can still get existing Halon units recharged (and it's almost as expensive and as hard to find a shop as getting an R12 auto AC system recharged), but they are no longer manufacturing new Halon units.

glad your safe...good lessons learned here..
gonna go home and check my extinguishers BTW halon usually requires a "soak" time, and wont do much good if you cant satureate and contain the fire...or have enough to coninuously soak like a jet engine....
