Default Extended Kawasaki warranty, Is it worth $500.

I have a 2005 Mean Streak and have been contemplating the purchase of an extended warranty. My friend stripped out his rear end “differential”. Because of this repair cost, he said the warranty paid for itself. I’m in the process of installing pipes, and other mods. Won’t these mods void any extended warrenty? What about the co-pay or deductible. Is it worth it?
What do you guys think??

The mods wont void the waranty. The Magnusen/Moss act says th dealer cant void the warranty just because of modifications to the vehicle.

http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/conline/pubs/...s/warranty.htm this is some reading about the act if you have time.

I'll try to keep this short but it prob won't work. I have had 6 Kawasakis and they have all been as reliable as an anvil(I did have a leaking shock seal on my 1500 but the shock was replaced under 12 mo warranty). Also, it is basically an insurance policy and Kawasaki is betting they won't have to pay out and lose money. That said, I DID get the GTPP warranty for my 2000 Classic FI and my 05 Mean streak. Why ? Well, they both had(have payments) and nothing more frustrating than a repair bill along with a monthly payment. Also, the 1500/1600 motors can be rather labor extensive if a repair is required. If a valve cover gasket leaks, or even a cam plug(to do it right), the motor could require removal for repair. This is a 4 hrs in labor alone + parts cost. Most dealers won't mess with your warranty as stated above but IF they can prove a mod was cause of a problem, say running Thunder intake w/o any FI management added and you fry your motor, they may have you. Go to e-bay and look up costs of Kawasaki GTPP warranties. They are commonly listed for $420. for 4 yrs. Take this to your dealer. I'm sure they'd match it as they are making over $50. just by punching some #'s into a computer. Plus, if you get the ext warranty from them they might be more friendly for repairs(aka not so much the requiring of repair but the timliness of doing it). If you do go with the ext warranty, get Kawasakis GTPP as it is ZERO deductible and dealers don't have to hassle you about a 3rd party warranty. Also get the 4 yr vs the 2 or 3 yr as additional cost is minimal and it is transferable if you sell at $0 fee. The new buyer will like this. Hope this helps... Troop

I do think it is worth it! I had a gasket leak after the initial warranty ended. Becuase I had the extended warranty, the dealer just took care of it. Also, it should not cost you $500. Back when I bought my mean streak Bikeaholic told me a bout a dealer in NY (I think it was NY), that sold the extended warranties whole sale. You do not have to buy it from your dealer. You are basically buying the warranty from Kawasaki. The dealer I bought my mean streak at wanted to charge me somewhere over $600 for the four year. I had a quote from the dealer in NY for $385 for the same four year warranty. My dealer ended up matching the price. He was not too happy about having to match the price, but either he matched it, or lost the warranty sale.. If I can find the website, I'll come back and post it. If not PM bikeaholic and maybe he will remember. Also, I think I seem it on Ebay a couple of times...

before I fully knew the reliability of the kawasaki line, I bought my bike and an extended warranty. the bikes paid for as well as the warranty, i'v still 2 1/2 years to go on the warranty...hope I don't need it. if not, I wasted money, if I do, I've saved money...only time will tell.

No save your money...bike is reliable. Do you think they sell extended warranties NOT to make a profit??

When I got my bike I bought a 2 year extended for $370 frm the dealer. I figured one covered repair would take care of the purchase cost. If I dont have to use it good for me.....

I think that the whole extended warranty issue is relative to what you think your chances of needing it really are. Take my case for example........3 weeks after the regular warranty was up, I had to take my '03 Nomad in to have the top end completely rebuilt. Luckily just 3 weeks before it ran out, I bought the extended warranty. My cost was $350 for an additional 4 years. If had not had it, then, I would have paid mucho denro for the rebuild. Just got the bike back a week ago and everything is great. So, if you have the extra money to spend, get it. Just my .02 cents.

I still have 9 months to decide on the extended warrenty, and have pondered the same question in my mind time and time again, I decided it would kind of like buying a fire extinguisher, better to have one and not need it than to need one and not have it.

I'm not much for extended warranties...having sold them for a major electronics chain and having to do the same on some products now I don't trust them. Most places that do it do it to pad the bottom line with pure profit! On average they make 85 cents on the dollar! It is a gamble for you and the business, just remember like in Vegas, the house (In this case Kawasaki) has the best odds! Always read the fine print and make the choice that is right for you!

Default yes go for it

I bought it and have used a couple of times. the last was even my fault...
While installing my mods thunder air and PC III I must have unpluged the fan and then it overheated and blew the coolant res. cap off. I took it to ther dealer because I couldn't fiqure it out. they fixed it and never mentioned the mods. I suspect it was easy money for them to just plug the fan back in... If you need it you'll be happy you have it...

I saw them on ebay, "buy it now" for $405.00. They are for sale by a Kawasaki dealer. Richard

I saw it on ebay the other day too...prolly same guy. I will have ALOT of miles on my MS in 4 yrs..was thinking about getting it...cause we dont have horrible winters here in memphis...I will be riding most of the year...so In 4 years..i expect to have 60k + miles easy....so before a yr..i may have the extended warranty...depends though... How many have a lot of miles on bike? with no problems? Cause I will be using this for work and pleasure..so it will get a lot of miles...think it'll handle it? I don't ride it hard...just once a week get it to around 100mph..just to feel the wind and let it breathe

If you are serious about getting one.....go to VROC and sign up. Then I will put you in contact with the guy that I got mine from. They give discounts to members of VROC. It is all legit......about 2 weeks after my purchase I verified the info on Kawasaki's website and then took my bike in for the rebuild. As I stated above, $350 for 4 years on my '03 Nomad.

I'd buy the 4 year plan if you're planning on selling within 4 years. The warrenty should give you an extra 500 on resale. Overall I don't buy extended warrenties myself- high profit margin stuff.

My dealer offers and extended/prepaid service warranty plan for 3 years which I did get. It extends the warranty 2 years to 3 years and all regular maintenance/service, , for example, oil changes, tune ups, etc, is included with priority scheduling. With the reuglar maintenance intervals, coast come out ahaead. You are tied to that dealer for serice. I'm very pleased with the dealer so it all works out for me.

billc5, sounds like a good thing...how much did you pay for it though? I'm sure its a lil higher than the #'s floating around here, but sounds good. I sure would like the dealer doing some things to my bike, as I am not too handy with the wrench.

When I recently drove to Spokane to buy a motorcycle lift...the guy helping me kept asking me if I wanted an extended warranty on it. I told him it was for private use not for an industrial shop but he kept asking me if I wanted the warranty. Got a little annoying to say the least. I realize he must have been getting a % for selling the warranties.

EXACTLY...I did my 6600 mile "service" today on my V2K myself. I changed oil and filter, looked over the important fasteners, checked brake pad thickness, checked the belt tension, and aired the tires to 40 psig. And, BTW, when I finished, the bike WAS CLEAN, WITHOUT ONE SMUDGE OR SCRATCH!! The drain plugs were cleaned before re-installing and the oil filter was partially filled to limit the 'lack of oil pressure' time during restart.

COST:

Oil- $12
Filter $9
Satisfaction - 100%

And I didn't have to schedule it, wait for it, etc. Gave me time to go ride about 60 miles today!
