Default The pipes are in and I have some questions?

I just received my exhaust – Cobra Shorts and power commander. I should have my tornado intake next week. I’ve never installed an after market motorcycle exhaust before, so please excuse.

I didn’t expect the exhaust to come in pieces. I expected the header and muffler to be one piece. The heat shield is one piece. Is this normal for all exhausts?

I thought that if air gets into the exhaust system the hydrocarbons will detonate (backfire). The two pieces look like they just slide and clamp together. Should I seal the connection??

Thanks

Also, man is it grueling to have to wait for the intake to arrive before installing the exhaust.

yep, they come in pieces but when assembled will be tight. I have V&H but they all come like that.

HK's are one piece- 2 pipes 1 bracket. Did you remember to get the exhaust gaskets too?

The V&H BigShots come with the inner pipes all in one piece. The heat shields need to be attached separately though.

[quote=uf-engineer] Should I seal the connection??[quote]

If you like, you can seal with a high temperature sealant. I know I've used Yamabond 6S (a high temp Yamaha product) and one from Honda called Hondabond HT (High Temp).

If you don't use a sealant, and there is a slight leak, it will most likely go away over time by simply filling up with carbon deposits anyway.

I have the Cobra Shorts, I installed them as per the instructions. They have performed flawlessly for 15000km.
With the added bonus of testing car alarms all the time as well. It is kind of gratifying.

whats the furthest away from a car have you set the alarm off?

I have run down the city street and set several cars in a row off while they are parked next to my lane but my all time record was like 35 feet or so away in the Safeway parking lot. starting up the bike make the alarm chirp but a good twist of the throttle made it go.

luv my pipes

I have not tested the range yet. I was in Vancouver on my bike this past summer. Had to go donw a residential road and set off at least 1/2 dozen alarms within one block.
Fun, fun, fun.
