I am looking for a new seat for my 95 800A and have a question that perhaps someone out there can help me with. I searched the site for seat information and see many comments regarding the comfort of the Corbin and Mustang aftermarket seats. I am looking for comments about the lower back support on these seats.
See, my 2005 riding season came to an abrupt, unforeseen end on October 7th when one of my lumbar disks, (lower back) decide to literally blow out. Much rehab and back surgery the day after Thanksgiving, and I can at least walk and sit again. Although I am not yet permitted to bend, I am able to finally sit at the computer once again. Due to this issue, I am going to have to install a seat that more fully supports my lower back while riding, especially on the longer rides. The other option the doctors have given me was to not ride anymore, and that it certainly NOT an option. I have looked at the Mustang with the driver back extension and it looks as if it may do the trick. My question to those who have an aftermarket seat, how well does it support the lower back?? I need to prevent the rounded back slouching that I do when on the long rides and I am not confident just THINKING about it will keep me in good position all the time. It would be nice if the seat could help me out on this one. Any thoughts?? Thanks. |

I have had 3 surgeries on my lower Lumbar. The last surgery included fusing L3, L4, L5, & S1 with bone taken from my hip, and reinforced with titanium rods and screws. Needless to say the stock seat on my 800A didn't work too well for me, and I also needed some back support. I put a Corbin Gunfighter and Lady seat with a driver's backrest on. It made a lot of difference!
I would highly recommend a driver backrest to you, even if you just add an after market driver backrest to your stock seat. Good Luck, and I hope you heal quickly. |

I agree with rwrighter. Not only will you want a seat with good comfort but a backrest really makes a huge difference when it comes to those long rides. I have a Mustang seat and a Protac backrest and the difference is day and night comfort wise.

I was thinking along the same lines for a backrest. It is good to hear that it does indeed make some difference. Thanks for the links bluestringer! The back support also looks like it may help too. I had not thought of it.
I had a microdisectomy of S1-L5. Still sore as heck and anytime I bend, Ouch!! I could not even sit on the bike after it happened without shooting pains down my leg. I sure hope it gets better! thanks for the thoughts!! |

I've had the L4/5 and L5/S1 discs cut on twice now. Should have done L3/4 while he was in there. On the job injury, and L&I here won't fuse without at least 2 failed surgeries. Surgery number 2 is still holding (June 2004). If one or more let go again before May 2008, I'll end up with a fusion from L1 to the pelvic girdle. My neuro goes at least one good disc past the injured ones.
I haven't added a backrest. So far, the windshield and bars that were on the bike at purchase are doing enough. Did a nice 60-70 mile ride one day with the wife. My barhopper would have crippled me up for a couple days. The Vulcan, I was just sore for a day. Was off work from Feb 28 2002 to May 2005. Sounds like you are recovering nicely. Best wishes for a speedy recovery and a comfortable return to the saddle. -Jeff

On my 1500 Classic I have the mustang seat but do not have a backrest. It works great for me. My wife had the same seat on her Honda Shadow Aero but after a trip to Daytona Beach about 1100 miles round trip this summer, she said she wanted more back support. So, I ordered her the mustang seat with driver backrest. She now says it is like sitting in a easy chair while riding. Hope this helps with your decision making.

Thanks for the great options. I did not realize so many were or have been in the same situation as I am now.
Finally did the winter maintenance on her last night. My boys helped with the oil plug drainn plug and the low stuff. Fluids all changed, fuel treated, waxed and shined. Looks great even stuck in the garage. Two months late, best I could do. I had also not thought of the risers as an option. What exactly would I be looking for Whistle. I'm 5 foot 7 and getting shorter with every surgery. Thanks for the offer kaw. I think I am going to go with the Mustang with the backrest. So many comments on it being very comfortable with little brreak-in needed. Talk to you all later, |

Many here seem to really like the PhatRisers II by Scootworks. Take a look at them and see if you like the looks. http://www.scootworks.com/swcart/sho...skawhandle.htm |

They do look sharp whistle! The UPS man will need to be stopping by sometime this winter! I just looked at them on spok's bike in another thread and I do like the looks and the side pics seem to show that the bars come back just a little bit and bar angle can be adjusted easilyfor more or less "gain". Thanks for the ideas.
