Default Replacing Stock Air filter with K&N

Hello Everyone,

My name is Luis Dominguez and I'm new to the group. I started riding again two months ago after a 15-year hiatus and enjoying every bit of it.

I did have a question regarding the use of a K&N filter on a stock VN1600. Do I need to install a Power Commander or TFI when swapping out the stock air filter with a K&N air filter. From what I know, this particular model comes lean from the factory. If after market intake air kit or pipes are added, owners must also install a FI management device such as Power Commander or TFI. However, I don't know if this would apply to just a plain air filter swap. I've already swapped out the stock filter with a K&N filter and the bike feels and rides better through all the gears. The biggest concern I have is with damaging the bike due to the increased airflow (as slight as it may be). The consensus from different people I've corresponded with is that it is not required due to the already restricted plumbing with the stock intake and any additional air flow from the K&N is negligible. I'm trying to get as many opinions as possible. Ideally, from someone who currently runs just a plain ole K&N with a stock intake. Thanks in advance.

Nope, you won't need a PCIII/TFI/etc just by swapping out the stock filter with a K&N. I ran a K&N in stock housing on my 1500 FI w/o any probs. Troop

i am running a K&N and pipes and i installed a PCIII and had it dyno tuned too.
i dont think just a K&N will do anything, but you should really look into freeing up the exhaust.

I had the dealer tell me to disconnect the battery for 30 minutes when switching over. Suppose to reset computer when you crank it up...
