2006 Vulcan Classic 1600 kick stand issue

Has anyone experienced problems with the spring on the kickstand falling off?
I recently used some lube on the kickstand bolt due to it starting to get a little hard to put up and down..
I went for a long ride that day and got to my half way point..
I stopped to get gas and when I was ready to leave the bike stalled on me.. I look down and the kick stand is in the down position..putting the bike in neutral I start it again and put up the kickstand and get it in gear to take off and it dies again... looking down once more the kickstand is again down.
I get off the bike and look at the stand and cant see whats wrong... I walk over to where the bike had been and find my kickstand spring lying on the ground..
I try to put it back on with the stand down but that was a no go..I found a fence to lean my bike up against and put the stand up and was easily able to slip the spring back on..
Which I would think is a problem as if it goes on that easy in the up position it will come off that easy..
I prayed that the stand would stay up the rest of the way home which it did but..............its done it to me a couple of times in just moving it in and out of the garage. (spring coming off)
I looked at the bolt and nut holding the stand and its got threads past the nut so Im not sure if its too loose.. there is a bit of slack in the stand where it connects but I would think thats necessary to some degree...
The only other thing I can think of is that the spring is stretched...
I cant believe that there isnt anything other than raised lips at the end of the posts that the spring mounts too that is holding it on.
Who designed that potential disaster??????
Does anyone have any thoughts or have any of you had that similar problem?
For now I safety wired the spring to the kickstand in two places to keep it from slipping off the posts..
Thanks in advance...

I've never had this, but know people that have. The fix is a new spring.

Thanks for the info... Glad its an easy fix, besides my jerry rigging that seemed to be the only other option.. Its good to get it confirmed..
The guys down at the dealer for some reason weren't much help.

kickstand spring

Yes I had that problem, I put a jack under the bike and hit the spring as I was going up. it stretched the it so I had to make a shorter bend in the hook.
