I found that but that's a little more that what I'd want to spend.

Hi..... just put a Dyna 3000 aftermarkrt Ignition on my 800 Drifter. gives you a total of 8 curves to try and lets you bump up the rev limit. Also the bike starts much faster than before. curves 5 6 and 7 are the ones you will likely try unless your bike is stone stock. Mine has an opened up intake, jets and Vance & Hines exhaust. After trying curve 6 I did 145 KM/HR with my girlfriend on behind... I weigh in at about 230 ready to go, still had steam left when I shut it down. Would have hit 150 for sure with 2 up. Maybe higher....Got mine off of Ebay for about $229

Cheers,

Bruce

Default Drifter 800 Ignition

The ignition I used is a Dyna 3000 model D3K2-1. This model is for 99-00 drifters but I am sure they have models for newer bikes.
As I mentioned I got it off of Ebay. But that was 3 months ago. will do a search tomorrow and see if they are still available. But I have seen them else where on the net.

It was the easiest mod i did on any bike. Take the seat off, remove the 2 screws holding down the old module, unplug the wires, plug in to the new module and replace.

Instructions are reasonable easy to figure out. Only 6 dip switches to set. I have mine set at 7750 RPM limit, and curve 6. I tried 5 and it was flat, 4 was even worse. The confusing part is the diagram of the advance curves. 6 looks to be lower and slower advance? but the performance was great.

I have a regular Dyna jet kit in the carb. 165 main, needle on the 3rd from the top groove. I gutted the stock intake basically now it has the same configuration as a Ness Big Sucker A/C. Really breathes free. Also have a K&N. Vance and Hines pipes but not specifically for the Drifter... think they are for a Classic. But they fit well and sound good. If you do a websearch for "Grampsizing" you will get the instructions on modifying the A/C. Makes a huge difference and no noticeable increase in intake noise.

One other poster said there was no end to what you can do to hop up the motor. I would respectfully disagree. All I can find is aftermarket cams from Megacycle, and those are on a core return basis. And while the specs are good, they only have 1 cam to pick from. I have never found high compression pistons (if anyone knows where to get them PLEASE tell me?) And milling the heads is problematic as they have water passages in them and who knows how much one can safely take off. If there is enough meat there that would be an easy way to get some power. I just had 50 thou shaved off my 93 EVO heads and it made a world of difference...... hope someone out there can say how much is safe (if any?). Rods were mentioned? Stroker? I have not even heard that mentioned before. Be great if its out there. My Harley makes so much torque my drifter feels like a scooter. But it is a great bike and I will not likely ever get rid of it.

hope some of this helps. But mainly its intake exhaust and jetting. I hope to eventually try the cam.

Cheers

Bruce

What tire size choices do I have for the Drifter 800? I'd like to go with a little wider rear tire if at all possible.

bruce.. great looking bike... and thanks for the info on the dyna 3000

I was the one that said you can hop up these motors... you are right... there is not much bolt on stuff... but with a good machinist and lots of money you can make the bike do almost anything you want... by the time you are done though you mine as well buy a V2K

let me ask you more about the ignition module you bought... Dynatek Performance Electronics - Dyna 3000 Series Ignitions for Late Moodel Cruisers

1. Did it improve gas milege
2. Did you get seat of the pants performance difference?
3. Did you use aftermarket coils or stock coils... think it matters? For 250bux this mod sounds pretty sweet... i may be interested in this... but may need to richen my mixture or get some premium fuel... I am currently using a 50 piolt, 155 main and dynojet needle 2nd clip... a/f screw is about 3/4 turns out i think... when the weather gets warmer i need to rip the carb off and double check all that...

Thanks for any advice or info...

maybe try these then

Dunlop Cruisemax Whitewall Metric Cruiser Front Motorcycle Tire

but they almost look like the same tread pattern as the D404's and those D404's only last 6k miles... i already almost have that on my E3's and they are not even starting to look worn yet

Does the Drifter 800 tires have tubes? If so do I have to buy special tires to take a tube or just any tire will do?

Thanks

If a wheel has spokes... it usually has tubes (I haven't run across one that doesn't, so I'll say 'usually'), and any tire will work, whether it be "tubeless" or if you can still find tires that are made for tubes. I've got the spoked rims on my classic, and just put a Metzeler ME880 on mine, and people also use them tubeless as well...

Yes, It has tubes, and you can put tubes in tubeless tires with no problems.

Another question. Without spending money on saddle bags, what other, cheaper, options might there be for me to carry some items while I ride? I have a small magnetic tank bag but it's only large enough for my wallet and some odds and ends.

Well, there are fork bags, sissy bar bags, windsheild bags, my son uses a backpack, he likes his bike "clean", You must have some faith in that magnetic bag, I would think wind and vibration would cause it to fall off, I bolt or strap everything.

I'm thinking a backpack too so I can fit shoes and stuff in it when I ride to work. I just hate having anything on my back when I ride.

The bike came with older leather saddle bags but I gave those away. I sort of wished I would of kept them for longer rider though.

I've been using the magnetic tank bag for over 2 years now without it so much as slipping at all. Even on my sportbikes with aggressive driving.

corbin makes a nice seat... i did have trouble getting it on my bike with the saddle bag brackets and everything else going on...

they are pricey but its really your only option.. UNLESS you get a stock 2 - up seat - but then get it reupholstered with closed cell foam cause they are like riding on rocks otherwise

Yeah, the dang 2 up seats are super expensive. I'm always looking for a stock one and hoping to find a good deal on one.
