Default 91' vulcan 500 exhaust question

I managed to get a pair of new old stock cobra mufflers for my newly acquired en500a. Unfortunately, to install, I have to cut the original pipes just in front of the crossover which I won't do until I get a spare set of pipes to screw up instead. At least then I'll be able to go back to stock.

My question is: if I install the cobra mufflers, is rejetting the carb necessary?

I tried the cobra website for info but these pipes are legacy items that aren't made/supported anymore.

    Any help/suggestions would be appreciated.

    Thanks

if your just adding pipes, no jetting is necessary.

    good luck on your project

Great news! Just picked up a good used exhaust system on ebay for $65. Had a crack in the crossover but that's going to be cut off anyway.

    Thanks Spok.

Must have changed them after the 90's. The ones I've seen have mufflers that clamp on. On the one I had I just removed the stock mufflers and clamped on the aftermarket ones.

And no, you don't need to rejet the carbs.

    Default exhaust gasket question

does anyone know the size of the exhaust gaskets (ring gasket between header pipe and head)?

it's a principle thing...not an expensive part...but the dealer near me is way to high

I can get a good deal on these from a 3rd party but need to know the diameter of the stock gasket.

Ok, got this on another listserve. Now I don't know what to do.

Seems like a lower restriction exhaust might affect backpressure and lean out the mixture, making things heat up too much. The last thing I want is the new exhaust blueing.

Hmmm....what do you guys think about this posting?

Go to JC Whitney and get a set of generic clamp on mufflers. They come with adpaters to fit different size headpipes, and they have baffles. There will not be enough difference in back pressure to tell any difference. Open up the air/mixture screw a quarter turn or so to richen up the mixture. Worked fine on my 500, but remember it's not a v-twin and will sound like a 4 banger on steroids with low restriction exhaust (can you say fart can). The stock pipes sound much better.
