Talking Yet Another Mod Done

Yes indeed, sometimes I amaze me. Here goes:

Everyone who's done a pipe/breather mod knows that, b/c the stock air plenums come out, you're left with a big gaping "hole" on the left side like this

But mine will look like this

That's right boys and girls, the stock air filter cover. This is how:

First I welded a ho-made bracket to to original filter backplate mount

Then lined it up and drilled & tapped 2 screw holes to match the original phillips head screw locations

Then cut 2 plates out of thin metal to fit the left-over holes in the backplate

Tomorrow I'll sandblast/wirebrush the parts and paint with flat black engine paint, then re-install. With a small bead of silicone on the inside edges of the plates, the compartment is now weather-proof and provides a small new storage compartment; for what I don't know yet, but it sure looks good! The left side gets a big piece of chrome put back on, and b/c I work in the metals industry total cost was $4.99 (for the paint).

I am so, so good.....

Not taking away from your ingenuity, which is impressive, but why? Don't you know have mismatched covers?

Good job Russ. You must be keeping both covers the same?

You mean the same on left and right? Naaaah, I just just haven't seen any aftermarket left side "hole fillers" that sent up little signal flares saying, "Buy me!! Buy me!!". So I thought, "WTH, I gotta do something. That looks like cr@p". So this is what I ended up with. As far as storage, I was thinking of little things like extra tools for longer trips, maybe spare bulbs and fuses, rags, etc. Who knows. I've got some left over paint-on bed liner stuff from touching up the truck- I was thinking maybe painting the inside of the chrome cover with it so whatever gets put in there won't rattle or buzz.

Now there's a great idea!

Yeah, I wish!! Still working 7 days/wk, but hoping for a business slowdown in March. Heading to Groton, CT in June for a navy sub reunion. What all you wanna do?
