I complete agree with the letter to the editor, although I wouldn't have written it myself. To put Indian decals on your Drifter is no different than putting Harley decals on your V2K. It's about as poser as you can get.

This doesn't make my blood boil at all. Each of us is entitled to his or her own opinion about things. The one guy likes his Drifter in Indian attire, and the other one can't stand it. Who cares really? Not my money, not my bike, not my style, but it didn't anger me to see it dressed up as something it's not either. Eaglebeak has a good point too. It is poser, but once again, his bike, his money. On the other side, the guy never once called his bike an Indian. If you price Indians of that era, I'd more than likely just buy a couple of Big Dogs myself. Just chiming in my 2 cents though.

I know this though, there are Indain motorcycles that were built opver 50 years ago still on the road and more valuable than most brand new bikes are today. Run another picture of that Drifter 50 years from now next to a 150 year old Indian Chief and let your readers deiced which one loos the part.

wouldnt a 50 year old bike 50 years from now be 100 years old?

I actually agree with the content of that letter, though not the way the author wrote it. It basically comes down to this - its a KAWASAKI, not an indian. Once you rebadge it as an indian, you've crossed the line into sheer poser territory IMHO.

I love my 2007 SE Meanstreak and I would never consider throwing a HD nameplate on there, which is tantamount to what this guy did with his drifter. While we're at it, lets go stick the corvette logo on a riced out honda civic and call it a day.

I see that it's two years old, but how ironic is that that he's talking about pretty much the same thing from a month ago.

Yeah the thread is a couple a years old, however it's still quite relevant and further more I would not have bought my Drifter 2 years ago had it not had the Indian Chief style. But What the hey, the 1500 Drifter has gone the way of the DoDo and Gilmore Ca. Indian Motorcycle Co..(or has the Indian name been resurected again?) Those '99 Drifters looked a heck of a lot more antique than the '99 Chiefs..But anyway I'm just glad I got mine. BTY..Am I a Poser??? I installed the Harley tombstone taillight, The old Harley style front fender light (but get this, It's the one that is streamlined with the amber lens that looks like the space cadet with the lit lens running thru the top of the "helmet" but I mounted it on the top of the rear fender facing back (looks great!) Another different one of the old HD streamliner style fender light graces my front fender..Last year I mounted a small Indian head w/ warbonnet fender light on top of my headlight can..found it on ebay, it's about half the size of the actual Chief style fender lite, It's really neat too & looks great up there and I did take off the Vulcan and Kawa badges and put a beautiful gold leaf tank decal in Indian style script that says Drifter (not warbonnet head type) made by "Winners Cycle Graphics" Search the name to see the product, great quality/customer service. And then the '59 Caddy taillights w/ blu dots complete my Drifter...Maybe I'm a Multi-Poser. I'll try to get some photos up soon. Surely this combo ought to offend someone...???
Nice Forum!

CAN' T let this old thread fizzle.....Hey hot off the press!!!!! (well maybe not so hot,) Rumor has it that these very rich capitalist guys from some damn foreign country are starting up a brand spankin' new company and they are going to build a "BOUTIQUE CYCLE" as in very pricey that, now get this, LOOKS JUST LIKE A.... DRIFTER!!! It's got the Drifter fenders, tank and general overall design. However it is probably not going to be as technologically advanced as the 1500 Drifter..as in driveshaft, multiple spark plugs, instrumentation , air shock suspension, fuelie etc..etc...etc... and I believe they are going to rip off a name that was legit until the early 1950's that used to be known as "Indian!!!!" can you believe it!!! And the price these "DRIFTER CLONES" will cost...Amazing.............................
Daddyo....Man I'm glad I own a REAL DRIFTER!

They can't used the name Indian or they'll get sued back into oblivion as Indian is back again with a new company and bike for 2009

Ah ok I get it, sarcasm, didn't see it at first. Just as well as I was getting all riled up when I read this remark "very rich capitalist guys from some damn foreign country", considering it's an American company in American run by and financed by Americans.

Indian Motorcycle Rolls Off Its First 2009 Chief Vintage at Cyril Huze Blog

How cool does this sound!! And I quote from Cyril Huze "Production line is organized in teams of 6 workers who remain responsible for the bikes produced after they are sold. I was told during my visit to Indian that buyers will be able to talk to the people who built their bikes. Cool…"

They are located here and employ Americans, but the parent company, financing and backing is a British company that specializes in buying "broke" companies with popular names and reviving them.

Chris Craft boats is another of their success stories.

Harley Davidsons have chinese and japanese parts on them.
They are not all round american anymore.
Btw, let's face it, the japanese make a better product and for less money.
What else is there to say?
