Oil hot.
Bike parked as level as possible.
Proper amount of oil and a new filter.
Remove drain plug, might have a gasket, allow oil to drain.
Once it stops replace plug/gasket and torque to spec.
Remove oil filter, make sure original gasket is removed if its a spin-on. Allow oil to drain if any.
Install new filter, lube gasket with some freh oil to ease installation.
Top up oil to spec.
Double check drain bolt and filter. Start bike, make sure the oil light goes out.
Idle for 2-3 mins, stop engine and recheck oil level.
Recycle old oil, enjoy a ride.
Check your manual for oil viscosity and drain bolt torque specs.

Also look down near the kickstand and remove the large nut there ( I think it's 17mm ) and then remove the screen and clean it out. Observe the way it came out and return it once it's cleaned.

wc covered it pretty well tho I thought he was gonna forget about the oil screen . If you haven't gotten one, get a Clymers manual for your bike- it's good at describing the basic and routine stuff you can do yourself to save the bucks. And get a telescopic inspection mirror. That way you can look at the oil level sightglass while sitting on the bike and holding it vertical. It's alot easier than squatting down to see the level while holding the bike up.

And welcome to the Forum! Here in central NC I use 10w-40 in the spring (Mar-Apr) and fall (Sept on), but now is about the time to change over to 15 or 20w-50 for the heat of the summer. Also- use the owners manual for the maximum miles between changes, but if you find the the bike jumps from 2nd to neutral during engine braking or rattles a little when downshifting from 3rd to 2rd, it's time to change it again. You'll see what I mean.....

Please don't ever compare my beloved Meanie to the F word! Now a Harley Davidson, that's about as reliable as a Ford!
