subject: Gas leak from the gas cap left brownish stuff on the tank
Hello, I am looking for some feedback and to see if any riders having the same problem. Bought a 2006 Nomad a week ago and have ridden 300 miles so far. I noticed a few hours later ( I think) after coming home from riding, several brownish stuff (waterly or oily substance) formed near the cap on the right side of the tank. It happened a several times already and I did not know the source of this and what that was. To find the source of this substance, yesterday I placed a white tissue paper around the gas cap along the circular groove line and discovered this morning that the brownish stuff soaked ( a little bit but enought amount to make me concern) the tissue and it smells like gas. Now I know this is from the gas cap. But what is this brown stuff smelling like gas? I understand that there should be normal gas vent in the event of over heating of gas in the gas tank. However If this was a normal gas vent, there should be no residue like this formed on the tissue or on the surface of the tank because the gas should evaporate right away. Does anyone know what this brown stuff is? Thank you in advance! |

Don't overfill the tank. If you come close to the ring at the top of the tank you'll quite often get gas leaking out onto the gas tank.
Not sure why it's brown but my bike is silver. A friend of mine has a white vulcan and his tank was really bad until I told him about the overfilling. His problem has gone away now. hope this helps Greg |

Thanks for your reply.
I did not overfill the tank. It was an 1/2 inch below the neck of the tank. It happened even if the tank was half empty. Everytime I came home after riding a dozen miles and this thing happened a few min or an hour so later. BTW I went to a dealer last Sat and two technicians heard my concern and they opened the cap and they can hear the sound of high pressure gas escaping. They immediately said the sound was abnormally forceful and asked me leave my bike so they can look at it in detail. They can not explain why the substance is in brown color either. Well, two days have gone by already. A guy at service department said they ordered a part called "shield" (?) with PN 48171-14G00-YBA but he can not explain to me what that "shield" is and how the shield can fix the gas leak. I was trying to find the PN but I can not find this PN in Kawa web site. I am going to call again. Thanks again! |

Does your tank have the 'neck' (no idea what this thing is really called) down in the tank? My tank has a piece that forms a tube that is prob 2 inches long maybe, the same diameter as the fill hole in the tank. When I picked mine up, the mechanic stressed do not fill gas up into this 'neck, tube' whatever you want to call it. He said he had experience with people doing so and it puking gas thru the cap.
Anyway, hope that makes sense.

Just bought a 2006 800 Drifter with the same problem. It ended up Kawasaki had to replace the tank. The dealer had to do it in steps. First replace a 0 ring at the fill hole, then replace the cap and next they replaced the tank, that worked. the whole thing took a little over a week. Keep on that DEALER!
