I love the looks of spoked wheels however I hate tubes!!!
Is there a way to convert your spoked rims to run tubeless tires?
Thanks

Good question!
In memory of my friend Deron Harden. Life isn't going to be the same without him.
What you'll need are some tubeless type tires, fill stems, and a can of "Liquid Vinyl", commonly used to seal the cut ends of marine rope or dip a pliers in it to get a handle coating.... Use a small paint brush to apply the liquid vinyl to the area of the rim formerly covered by the tube saver band after cleaning the area with brake kleen, or similar degreaser. This will cure up and make the spoke ends and rim airtight. Worst case scenario is if you have to true the wheel or adjust any spokes, you'll have to dig for it and re seal...
More tham likely your tires are already tubeless type( most are ,they just are able to run a tube in them if needed) there's aslo a place in Califronia that can make your spoke rim into a tubeless rim by sealing the spokes on the inside of the rim. They probably do it along the way that Texrider described.Originally Posted by Pooker
No, I'm sure the new Vulcan 900 rims are not air tight and have to use tubes.Originally Posted by woodchucks800
being in the tire business i would be skeptical of ripping down the road at hiway speeds even if a pro did it let alone a DIY project. i also would think there would be a vibration issue to deal with for sure

I know the 900 spoke rims need tubes. I'm saying that most TIRES that are on spoke rims are the tubeless type tires. Take a look at any stock tire on a spoke rim and more than likely it will say tubeless on it.Originally Posted by Pooker
I don't know what the big deal with tubes is anyway. It seems most people that complain about it think there going to have a blow out and crash going down the road . How many times do you or anyone else actually know someone thats happened too, not just a I heard so and so had a blow out and crash? I've logged to many miles over the last 20 yrs on tubes with out so much as a flat let alone talk to anyone that has had a blow out ( I know people that have had a flat ,just not a blow out an crash)Originally Posted by relli

I don't care too much for tubes either, but my Dad brought up a good point. If you get a nail in a fairly new tire then all you need to do is buy a new tube and not a new tire.
now this brings up a question that i keep forgetting to ask: i see air canisters and plug kits for bikes (emergency of course) can you use the fix-a-flat in a tube type tire to limp in???or are you just screwed ?

Any tire you spray a canister into is junk from that point on. Great scam $10 can makes the tire vendors $100 plush richer.
I'm sure they invented inflate a tire spray product in the first place..
The propellant in many fix a flat cans is Propane. Just like your grill. BOOM!

I had a Flat tire on my C50 and it was a tube, I didnt use fix a flat I used slime. I pulled the nail and then put in the slime, aired the tire took it to the shop and had the tube replaced. so you can run on it, just get it fixed first chance you get.

Wheel Works in California used to seal spoke rims, but they stopped because the EPA banned a chemical in their formula. They were supposed to have a new formula a couple months ago but I don't know if it ever happened.
Gadget has DIY instructions on his website. I personally wouldn't even consider doing DIY.
I run Ride On as a preventative sealant and it has worked for me. I just had new tires put on because of a nail inthe back one and discovered that the front tube was shredded in the tire but the Ride On had worked well enough that I didn't even have an air leak. The back one got the nail in it and I didn't even know it was there until the next morning when it was flat.
I too have alwasy heard people say that you will go down if you get a nail/flat on a tube tire because they supposedly deflate faster that a tubeless btu I'm not sure I believe it. It almost seems like it would be the opposite because although the spoked rims will leak air, they will slow it down enough so it won't pop like a balloon.
BMW does malke tubeless spoke rims. The spokes go to the lip of the rim rather than the center.
Finally, you can't look at a tire and assume it's not running a tune because it says tubeless. Most motrcycles these days are labelled as tubeless but when put on most spoke rims you do have to use a tube.
