Default '83 550 LTD plug wires

My plug wires on my '83 were cracked and had spark jump from the wires. I checked into purchasing new wires. Found out they were not available seperately. Was told i had to purchase new siamese coils to get new plug wires. I had an idea. I unscrewed the nuts on the coils and removed the plug wires. The old plug wires had a rubber type o-ring under the hold down nut which i also removed. I bought a set of automotive plug wires which happen to be for an old pinto. I cut the plug wires to length, installed the rubber o-ring onto the new plug wires and reinstalled the plug wires onto the coils in place of the originals. They work great. Cost me $17 instead of the $170 that it would have cost me to purchase the new coils and wires. Has anyone else done this? Or anything different to keep from buying new coils just to get new plug wires. Thanks

I did that a year ago on my Ninja 900.
Cut 3 feet of wire to length for eachh cyclinder, dielectric grease on the connections, nice and tidy and less expensive. Coils are still good and I also cleaned up the grounds for the coils where they attach to the fram as well as the 12v leads into the coils. MINT!

That's seems to be the way to go if the coils are still good. I was wondering if anyone else had done the same thing. I'm already liking this website. Thanks for the reply.
