This video was captured by a local who actually caught the whole thing on tape. Based on watching the video a number of times, I would say he made several mistakes. Would be interested in the comments from this board about the video.

Besides the obvious mistakes, hopefully some folks were sent out to warn other motorists of an accident ahead.

I work at the local county hospital and actaully got see the injuries (spinal) - He'll be ok but he's got a lot of rehab ahead of him. Emergency crew arrived in 42 minutes at the scene.

I'm just returning to riding with the new 900 after many years off a bike but I have to say excessive speed while passing on a twistie road is not smart. I hope the rider was okay but I guess it shows that bad riding practices are not limited to the crotch rocket riders I see racing at 90+ MPH between cars on the Washington beltway. I don't mean to be harsh since I made some mistakes as a new rider many years ago and will make plenty more as a returning rider. At the same time, I am taking my time to develop my skills on things like matching my speed to the road conditions, traffic, etc. Only other thing I can say is the Highway 199 looks like a great road for riding - if you treat it with respect.

It is difficult to tell from the video, but it looks like a couple of times, the driver of the van (whatever) crossed the centerline. It also looked like he went too far on the shoulder and bounced back into the road at one point, however, the perspective isn't perfect since we cannot see the hood of the vehicle and have no frame of reference. Those instances may have just been the camera operator bouncing around.
The cycle obvioulsy erred when he attemtped to pass on the double yellow, at a blind corner. Regardless, the vehicle driver should have stopped to offer assistance. At the end of the video, the driver says he would have pulled over if there was a spot to pull over. What does he mean at that point? Pull over to let the bikes pass? Or pull over to offer assistance post-crash? If the latter, there was a spot that looked liked a driveway just past the accident. Had he pulled over there, he could have been in a position to warn oncoming traffic of the situation ahead, as well as offer aid. There were at least 4 people in the car/van/bus/whatever that could have provided some kind of help. |

Besides the obvious mistake by the rider, I was surprised by the conversation in the Cage that demonstrated some of the misconceptions many people have about Motorcycle Riders.
In particular, the "they're gonna beat our a$$e$" comment, and I also noted that the driver said he would have stopped if there was a place to pull over, while passing several suitable spots to stop. I also noted that the place where the rider realized he was overspeed and began to try to correct, there were already several skid marks, presumeably from previous incidents, possibly motorcycles as well.

How dumb is that? To pass on a curvy road over a double yellow line? It looks to me like the rider had no idea what he was doing. Of course, the guy in the vehicle was a bad driver--weaving all over the road. I'm sure the bikes behind him wanted to get around him. But I would never, EVER pass in those conditions, no matter how bad the driver in front of me was. That was just asking for trouble.

This is why I take it easy on twisty roads. You never know what's around that next curve. Like another curve.

This was a video provided by the group of riders locally who stated it was of the one that caused our injured rider at our local hospital. Sorry if this was not the case. Still the lessons obtained could be beneficial for all.

As was pointed out in another forum that we discussed this, how do we know if the driver could have pulled over, maybe they were towing something, or driving a large vehicle. I love how we all jump to conclusions with only half the story.

All joking aside, IMO, the driver of the van was genuinely concerned for his safety and well being.
Now we know that 99.9% of bikers are harmless fools such as ourselves, but he obviously thought (right or wrong) differently. I bet their are situations that could present themselves where any one of us would not offer help if they thought serious harm could come to them because of it.

LMAO! I do not think that the driver of the van was really weaving. I think that was just the perspective of the camera man. They were all such pus***! His comment at the end about pulling over was ridiculous. He and the other guys in the van were genuinely scared. I do not care how scared I was in that situation. It is only human to stop and see if there is anything that you can do to help. Even IF the other riders were passed or believed the crash was the result of bad driving by the van operator, I think they would have been more concerned about the well being of their fellow rider then about beating up the people in the van! How ridiculous is that?
