    Default V2K and highway pegs

Got a V2K and needed a second foot position for long hauls. There's been a lot of complaints about the stock seat on the 2K, but I don't think it's so much the padding, but that the setup of the bike itself places you in a position where you're weight is directly over your tailbone. Needed to be able to stretch out my legs.

The dilemma: I'm 5'9". Even if I could reach highway pegs that were mounted to crash bars (which I'm not sure I could - at least lock my heels anyway) the tank and sheer gerth of this bike would make it impossible to wrap my legs around the tank/motor. I would have to set the pegs out way to far which, in my humble opinion, would look stooopid. So, I remember reading a tread where someone wished a man. would produce a peg that swings out from the floorboards. Hmmmm... I went to work...

    Fig. A

Fabbed a bracket out of 1/8" hardened angle that mounts under the floorboards to the threaded holes opposite/forward of where the skid pads are located. Painted it flat black and it disappeared. Mounted round pegs to the brackets. Since it swings horizontally instead of vertically, they needed to be round. Incidently, these pegs cost $15.00 in any of the parts catalogs. Can't remember who manufactures them, but they come with O-rings in the grooves. Because of your foot position, down and out, it tended to shuffle the rings so I cut them off. No real reason for them.

    Fig. B

    Fig. C

Finally, you can see that my legs are fully stretched and the pressure is off my tailbone. I've used these for about 1000 miles, now and let me tell you it makes a big difference in comfort. Could only go about 50 miles before my butt was screamin', but rode 200 and with the option of stretching out, had no problems whatsoever. The stock seat is just fine!

    Fig. D

All in all, cost me about $20 for the mod. The result... priceless!

I'm sure the one question you have is clearance. The difference in negligable with the pegs tucked in. I scraped the skid pads twice before, scraped the pegs twice since. But who cares!!!! Only cost me $15.00 for replacement pegs should I need it, but truth is... couldn't even see where I touched down. Never hit with the pegs out, but I only use them for cruising and when I do take turns, I'm aware of them. I'm not going to carve twisties with my legs stretched.

Anyway - thought you V2K'ers (with slight height issues <Spok>) might be interested.

Nice mod, but I have one concern. I've given some thought to the new pegs Kuryakyn is coming out with this fall ( http://www.kuryakyn.com/products.asp?bn=metric&ci=3682 ), But the the fact that the cruising peg is so low, as is yours, it makes me wonder what would happen if you had to perform a split second evasive manuever and the peg bound up in the extended position instead of folding up? It would surely cause a momentary loss of control. I believe that is why highway pegs are traditionally mounted higher up. Maybe I'm just being overly cautious?? What do you guys think?

It's not as low as you may think. The picture shown is the bike on the stand... and we '04 owners how low that sits the bike. It's a bit deceiving. As it stands, I have about 1000 miles of R&D into the pegs without one issue. They are not mounted so tight that I can't push them out with my toes or pull them back with my heels, so that when I get off the highway, I usually retract them. But if I had to swing the bike tight, they'd definately retract and the smooth, hard surface of the pegs would just skip. Don't see anyway that they could bind.

I'm just thinking of worse case scenerio, but your stock boards swing up a bit anyway, so the pegs would swing up too wouldn't they?

Yeah, they do pivot some. Real World? Don't know how they'd cause an issue.

Then again... you never know. So far, working out GREAT!

They look nice! You did a good job!

Maybe in some twisties you'll see if they have any issues.

I wasn't considering that the boards can pivot, so I'm sure you'll be fine. Probably be the same in the case of the pegs I'm looking at as well, as they'd flip up a ways before it would cause any problems.

Don't know if I'd have them out riding serious twisties - mostly for highway cruising. We'll see where they stand after another 1000 miles. Love having them, though. Ahhhhhhhh -- no more azz pain.

And thanks much for the compliment.

I have to agree. Riding twisties with them down may be pushing it.

I certainly love the added comfort of pegs and your's are in a nice spot to help with that. How tall are you? You look comfortable in your pic using them. I have some mounted on the crash bars and I tend to hook my heels on them rather tham place the soles of my boots on them.

I want some!!!. That is just what I have been looking for. I don't really like the crash bar look either.

Where did you get the hardened angle? I'm on a mission to copy you.

    Looks great.

    Hey Mark!

Picked up some angle at the local Ace hardware store. They sell it in from 3/4" to 1 1/2". D*mn if I can remember, put I'm pretty sure I used 1" (if not, 1 1/4"). Picked up a 1' length for about $3.50.

Cut the brackets to size/shape using a dremmel with a small cutting wheel - softened the edges, marked and drilled the appropriate holes and shot with flat black Rustoleum. Purdy darn simple.

    Here's the pegs:
    http://www.jpcycles.com/productdetai...&page=&search=

Took about 1 1/2 hours to shape the bracket. After the paint dried, about 30min. to get them mounted. Be sure to use Locktite when mounting. Good luck!

If you have any additional questions, let me know.

I didn't like the crash bar look either.....until I forgot to put my kickstand down a ways back. I'll tell you, I sure like the looks of them now. My bike fell over and came to rest on the crash bar. No scratches no nothing. it wasn't even that hard to level her back up.

    I'm a crash bar convert.

    trikebubble -

do you have highway pegs on your crashbar? Can't quite make it out from your avatar. If so, how tall are you.

Just wondering because at 5'9", there's no way I'd be able to comfortably reach pegs that far forward. Couldn't get my legs around this beast's 'beefy'ness.

Not to rain on your parade but someone already beat you to it. There called cruiser kickout pegs. Your way would be cheaper for sure. I have a friend that bought a set of them though and he loves them. Here is the link with pics. http://www.bikerbrackets.com/ckoppics.htm

I can't imagine riding the twisties with those pegs. I tend to let the toe of my boot stick out when I ride. Several times I have scraped the toe when riding the twisties. JMHO

Those look nice, but trying to extend them while at highway speeds looks kinda dangerous. I like Impact's set-up better for safety.

Yeh, I do. I have Kurakyn ISO Pegs mounted down pretty low. I like to rest my toes on them and keep my heels on the outside edge of the floorboard. I'm 6'2"

Haha! Believe me, I'm not trying to get rich off the idea (although the thought is nice). Just trying to pass along a low-cost solution to those riders like myself that wouldn't be able to reach highway pegs set forward on crash bars.

At the very least, I can tell you that the peg setup I installed does work very well. Unlike the kickout pegs, it does involve a little sweat equity.
