Default 900 Luggage Rack (home grown)

Well I am tired of waiting for a luggage rack and decided to build my own. I have the cardboard mock-up done (see below pictures). Haven't decided yet if I should leave the rear most portion square as in the pictures below or to taper them in a little to more closely match the flow of the bike.

Have any opinions about the taper?

Maybe a cutout on the table portion ... like a "V"?

Now to find a plasma cutter to cut all of this out in 3/16 steel except for the top portion (1/8"). This will be polished chrome when done.

Hi, congrats on your efforts! Great to see the "home grown" projects. Nothing else better defines "your" bike than that. I look forward to seeing the finished product. Have fun

Smile Nice Rack!

Lobo: Nice job! 'Twer me I'd leave it square simply for the "utility" of the rack. I'm guessing you'll have a bag or box of some sort covering it most of the time, no? Good luck & press on. If you decide to go into the biz, I'll buy one.

Peter & Cheri,

Thanks. Found a welding shop with a plasma cutter this afternoon. Hope to be able to get the steel later this week (UGH ... a trip to Reno). An old friend has two chrome shops so that isn't a big issue. I will do the welding here at the house. Will keep you updated on the progress

Peter, Thanks for the input. Was thinking about a barrel type bag that would match the rest of the upholstery?

Last year I made a sissy bar for my M50 and I will soon be adapting it to the 1600. I also made a license plate/reflector bracket but it is not chromed yet. A couple of pics...

You do nice work!

I just finished making some license plate bolts and the head of the bolts are 45 cal casings that I fired. I opted for the nickle casings as they polish up nice.

The luggage rack will take a little time to build, but pride of construction is a kick.

Thank you for sharing!

I may have spoke to soon. This only fits with the cobra sissy bar and you are making them for the OEM stock LT rack huh? Heck if you get them made and chromed i would buy one for my LT.

Thanks for the info Teamlopez, but that will only work when attaching it to Cobra's Sissybar. The 900 LT has a Kawasaki sissybar straight from the factory and I can't see the added expense of dumping the factory for the Cobra.

I do appreciate the input, now if they just made one to fit the factory sissybar.

Be sure and check it before discounting out of hand.
MANY F&S parts are made by Cobra, and IIRC, the Cobra rack fits the 1600 F&S backrest.
From looking at the above shots, it looks like the 900 may be a similar design.

BEAUTIFUL sissy bar Idaho!

Tell ya what...
Go on eBay and find seller "gmcyclesinc" and buy the one for the 1600... It's $109 plus $10 shipping.

If it doesn't fit, ship it to me and I'll Paypal you $135 for it to cover shipping and Paypal's 3% credit card fee.
If it does fit, you owe me a beer next time I'm in Carson City

I've been thinking about getting it for a while anyways, so I don't mind.
I'll consider the extra $25 my contribution to the 900 community.

Ah... here's the link:

Lobo... if you're going to go ahead and continue with building yours, then this offer is open to any other 900 owner.

Thanks Rich. I just fired them an email asking them to measure the spacing between the mounting brackets. Regardless if it works or not I would buy you a beer when in Carson next.

Reason that I'm pretty confident that it'll fit is because it's listed for both the 1600 and V2K.
We know the V2K shares the rear fender with the 900, so the width should be right, and I can't imagine there being two different backrest support plates for the same fender bolt pattern.

I would think that it would be less likely to fit the 1600 than the 900, since the V2K and 1600 do not share fenders.

I'm checking the kawasaki schematic now to cross reference part numbers of the sissybars for the 900 and 2000 now.
