Default Fishing pole on a motorcycle?

I fished for the first time in 30 years last weekend, and really enjoyed it. My friend (who is REALLY into fishing) is hooking me up with a rig, and I think I might venture to the local watering hole to do some fishing for fun...

Here is the question: Anybody devise a way to get a 5 foot rod from point A to piont B on a cruiser? I have looked at the collapsable rods that they sell, but my friend says that to get a good one, you have to pay a lot... you can get a better rod much cheaper that is one piece... I can see that.

Also, getting the fish home is an issue. I know a couple of places where you can fish have grills set up near by, so I could just eat them there... but, that is another delema...

Anyhow, how to get a big pole to and from a fishing hole on a bike? Any ideas?

Take up fly fishing and practice the catch and release style of fishing. Get a 3 or 4 piece rod. Yes, they do cost more. If you have not yet experienced this style of fishing then you are in for a very rewarding time on the water. And if you choose to not do any of this...well, at least you are fishing and it is all good. Have fun.

We've been looking at getting 4 piece fly rods as well. I wouldn't want to chance taking a one piece rod on a bike. I've priced out half decent 4 piece fly ords at around $200Cdn. (kinda pricey, may keep looking around. you do get what you pay for though)

Combining fishing and riding, pretty cool IMO.

Another way to go: I saw last year a fellow on a HD that had a trailer hitch. But on this occasion he was not towing a trailer- he had attached a small platform like you would see on an RV for coolers, etc. You could carry a small cooler for the fish, a small assortment of lures, bait, etc. Then it would be worth it to spend a little more for a better quality rig.

I put my fishing rod in one of those fleece lined cases and strap it across the rear of my Concours. Works fine, just gotta remember that you are much wider than before (I found out at a gas station in Payson Az., clipped the pump handle on my way out. No damage).

If your aren't going too far.... a guy around town bolted a PVC pipe of the appropriate diameter to his ride...stick the but of the rod in the pipe and let the rest of the rod stick up (angled back to keep it lower)....getting on down the road, makes it look like he's trolling. Won't work with a fly rod.

Yeh, it will, two piece fly rod will knock down to about 4 feet long. Slide that into the PVC pipe. Reel(s), and tackle go into one saddle bag, creel and waterproof ice bag go into other.

All great suggestions (even the Ronco Pocket fisherman!! I might get that just to annoy my friend...)... thanks!

The fishing holes around the area are only about 5 or so miles away, so nothing too far.

I guess I haven't ruled out the travel rods, but, I was thinking starting out with a regular rod (inexpensive) and see if I like it... if I do, then invest in a travel rod and take my motorcycle.

I might look into a PVC like thing, if there is a good place to locate it on the back of my Classic....

I did it on my older crusier, I put the bottom half in the saddle bag and the rest sticking out the top about 5 feet behind me pointed up. Just make sure the hook is tightly attached and doesnt fly around

I use an ultralight telescoping rod which fits nicely along with the tackle in a canvas fishing creel. Tie it to the back of the sissy bar and head for the water. If I plan to keep any fish, I'll drive and bring a cooler. One of the best fishing trips this summer was a ride back from Nevada down Highway 88 to Sacramento. Fished several alpine lakes along the way and caught a couple nice rainbows. Tossed 'em back so they get bigger for next time.

Getting there was harder, but the fishing was better.

When Tracy and I were planning our trip to Montana this past summer, we really wanted to bring fly rods. (The guy at the fly shop said he would beat us if we went ot Montana and didn't flyfish.) I geuss Montana is like Mecca for fly fisherpeople.

Anyways, we decided that we would not have enough time to enjoy fishing. Riding past some of those rivers and streams really made us think twice about that decision.
One day we will go back with our fly rods.
