My new Meanie ('04 dealer trade) will be in next week. I'm going to order a Hypercharger, Power Commander, and a set of pipes. Here's my dilema.......I want good sound, not real loud, performance, and a 2 into 2 system. I realize that the 2 into 1 system is the best prformance-wise, but I don't care for that look. I have my mind set on a 2 into 2 system, so I'm seeking advice on what works good in the performance category, and also good sound without being real loud.
The two that I am looking at are the Cobra Classic Slash Cuts, and the V & H Classics, or the new Powershots. All advice is welcome!

Any pipe but Cobra! Based on what I know about their quad pipes, which offer nothing but highly increased decibals and actually decrease H.P. according to some dyno tests.
I run a Jardine pipe & like both the sound which is not overly loud or annoying, but seems to improve performance also. I meant to say that I'm pretty sure Jardine offers a 2/2 for the M/S in addition to my 2/1.

Sledman,
Take a look at the Muzzy Drag Style pipes. They have a unique sound (nice low rumble and bark when you do a hard roll on) and performance is excellent. Muzzy has been building Vulcan performance pipes for a while and know what they are doing. The V&H pipes are all too loud for my taste. I ride 200 + mile days and the loud pipes get real old after awhile. I ride a 04 MS with the ForceWinder intake with the Muzzy pipes (2-2) and TFI. Steve at Sherm's Cycle Products out of Reedsport OR drags a MS and is the one who turned me on to the pipes and I am as happy as can be with them. Steve estimates 12- 15 HP gain as I have set up. If you have any questions let me know. John, Pensacola FL

The hyper charger sticks out over 6 inches and will not give you near the power inc. of the thunder air kit. If you can try to sit on a meanstreak with one installed........you may just change your mind.

I haven't ordered anything yet................but the bike.
I'm finding out that the 1600 takes different pipes than the 1500, according to the guy I talked with at Vance & Hines. Evidently they mount to the heads a little differently. And there are not many 2 into 2 models of pipes available yet for the 1600, that aren't drag style. Pipes and an air kit might wait till next spring, when I have more pipe choices. More air won't do much good unless it can escape well. I think I will do the power Commander, as from what I understand, the bikes are lean from the factory to satisfy EPA standards, and the "stock" program is supposed to make them run a little better. Then I'll have it for the pipes down the road, also. Keep the real world advice coming guys, it's nice to hear from people that own the bike, and have actually tried the things they are talking about!

The service manager at my dealership, who I know very well, insists that I'm on my own as far as re-mapping goes if I choose Hard Krome Pipes. He maintains that they have had way to many issues with them in the past. He's a pretty straight forward guy, too. He has 5 bikes of his own 4 of them are road bikes.
That doesn't mean I won't consider Hard Krome, though........

I'm running Hard Krome 3 inch big straights, thunder air intake, sherm's cycle coasters, exhaust torque cones, and a powercommander. I got a power commander map from an 03 1500 meanstreak with almost the same setup as my bike from thundermfg.com. I couldn't be happier with the pipes. I've put some vance and hines on other buddies bikes and I'm not impressed too much with their clamp on heat shields. The hardkrome pipes are a bit loud. They went on very easily and look great.
hope this helps another idea a guy from Sherm's cycle told me was to find the lightest synthetic hypoid gear oil for the rear end to reduce drag. later |
