I have never examined my old oil before but thought it might be a good idea. I got one of my wife's corning ware clear cassarole dishes, 9X13, and drained my oil into it. let it set for about 2 hours then poured it into the old oil cans to make sure I didn't use much between oil changes. The good part was that once most of the oil was poured out I could use a flashlight to shine from beneath the dish and I was able to see any impurities. I noticed just three little dark spots about the size of a pin head. Two crumbled when I rubbed them between my fingers and the third was a bit of metal. I actually expected to see more and was pleased by the results. I was glad that I only used about a 1/3 of a quart since my last oil change, and I am ashamed to admit that I let it go a little over 5000 miles since my last oil change. I went with the amsoil this time, I used mobile one synthetic last time.

Did you check your oil screen? That's where particles would likely show up.
I'd hide the casserole dish if I were you.

Magnetic drain plug.
I should probably tell Blackstone about it too... my iron results have been lower than what they're used to seeing on a new engine

Equally important or maybe even more so is the filter. Paper element filters filter down to 20 to 35 microns. Since your engine was built with a tolerance of 20 microns the dirt passing through your filter scratches the cylinder walls, rings, bearings and pistons. Many of the new filters are synthetic (polyester) and filter between 12 and 20 microns which tells us that the carbon and dirt are so small they will essentially pass through with little wear damage.
In summary you can save money with a Fram from Walmart or save your engine. |

The Walmart Supertech filter is actually a very good filter... as good as a standard Purolator (probably IS).
That said, I run only the M1-110 in the bike and M1-303 in my Duramax.

Actually I think the SuperTech filters are made by Champion as well.
