Hello everyone. I finished my MSF course a couple of weeks ago and I'd been shopping at half a dozen HD dealers near home for a month, looking at Dynas and Softails. Started researching metric cruisers and decided I wanted to check out Vulcans. Visited a couple of dealers, checking out the whole line. I thought the 900's were pretty sweet. Even though I'm a big guy, the V2K's were wider than I found comfortable. Really liked the 1600 Classic, but when I sat on a 2006 Mean Streak I knew I had found my new bike and it was like half the price I was looking at for a HD.
I had lots of people giving me the old song about getting a smaller used bike for my first ride, but I tell you I've found the Mean Streak easy to handle and I plan on using it a lot for daily 60 mile commutes. My 16 yr old son finished his MSF last week and he'll be old enough for his provisional Maryland DL in February and we'll be bike shopping then. He's set on a HD 883 Sportster, but he keeps eyeing my Mean Streak and asking for some parking lot practice. Funny twist on my purchase is that it was a good thing I saved $$$ on buying the Mean Streak, because the same day I bought it, my wife came home a few hours later (not knowing I'd bought a bike) with a new F-150 crew cab pickup. So I got mine and she got her's. I really didn't think she'd choose a pickup, but my other ride is a F-350 crew cab pickup, so maybe it makes sense. -Mike 2006 Mean Streak 1600 as a starter bike! |

Congratulations on the new ride. It has been raining here in the east coast all day. Hopefully it clears up tonight and I will be to riding once again to and from work. Ride safe.

Congrats. The Mean Streak was my first baby. I too looked at the HD Softails, sat on a few and such....then I saw the Mean Streak, and it was game over.
You are gonna love that bike.

Mike,
I passed my MSF last Dec and saw the Meanie at a Bike Show in NYC, I knew it was the right bike for me. People said the same thing, bit big for a first bike but it's been great. I'm 5'9 and 155 but it handles so well and is low enough to the ground for me to handle, Enjoy

Good choice and welcome to the forum! I too had thought I had to have a H-D when I was first looking at new bikes a couple years ago. After much looking and not finding exactly what I wanted, I thought I'd research the metric market and the MS kept catching my eye. It fit like a glove to sit on and rode even better! I've been extremely pleased with the Meanie ever since! If time goes by and you yearn for a little more power, you can do the intake, exhaust, and fuel controller mods for another 15-20% increase in h.p. The meanie is a really enjoyable bike after you open her up and let her breath!

Welcome Mike.
I've had a lot of Kaws follow me home too, usually after getting too close to a Kaw dealership .

Great story. I started on a 1500 Classic, which I wouldn't recommend for most people, but I was very careful and started slowly. Did a lot of parking lot practice and riding very early on Sunday morning when I was ready to ride the streets. I did fine. I never really consider Harleys. Hate the looks of the cheaper model Sportsters and they all seemed to look small next to the Kawis. Bottom line is that you'll probably spend a few bucks customizing any OEM bike you purchase, so why not save a boatload up front and use some of it tailoring your new bike to your liking?
Good to see another Maryland rider. Most days I commute on my V2K into downtown DC. Prepare for some "interesting" riding if you will be commuting on your Meanie.

Excellent choice for a 1st bike. I'm trying to figure out a way to buy the new '07' Ebony, Two-Tone: Metallic Flat Spark Black / Frame Persimmon Red Meanie. Don't think it's gonna happen for a while.
Post pics of your new bike so I can dream through your experience. ![]()
