Default Gloves and Jerry "Motorman" Palladino

Don't let the word Florida mislead you. It can get freaking COLD here at times. Lately I've been riding home in the morning, about 6am, in low 40 degree weather. And while my legs get cool, they really don't get cold with just my jeans on. My First Gear Jacket keeps me incredibly warm.

As for my Hands, OUCH!!! they Hurt like Hell. I mean pain. Wearing my warm weather gloves, and then inserts on top of that did NOT help one bit. Did I say OUCH!!! I even tried a weird idea until I could get some new gloves. I tried using Surgical gloves under my inserts, and gloves...the word OUCH still comes to mind.:

So I gave up, went to the Harley shop today, and picked up a set of gloves that have Gortex, and are wide enough to go over my jacket so the wind doesn't creep up under the jacket at the wrist. It's 55 degrees now and they worked perfectly. We'll see how they do in the morning when it's 40 degrees out and I'm riding 50 mph for 30 mins.

It also gave me an excuse to sit on the beautiful $28,000 110 cubic inch Screaming Eagle and try my gloves out. I mean ya gotta make sure they feel good when twisting the throttle and pulling the clutch right? But when he told me it was $28,000 plus tax, I made sure I was REAL CAREFUL to NOT scratch it or kick something when getting on and off the bike.

So what does this have to do with Jerry "Motorman" Palladino you say??

Well as I'm standing in line at the Harley shop, paying for my gloves, this guy is standing there wearing a "Ride Like a Pro IV" T-shirt. I start to tell him I wached that video, and it HITS me...hey, are you "Motorman". YEP, it's him, he lives right here in town, just north of me. I shook his hand and told him so far if all I learn from that video is how to do a U-turn using only one lane worth of space or on a neighborhood street, then the Video is worth the price. Told him that I'd practice the low speed stuff AFTER I get my crash bars. He said good idea.

He's a nice guy, very pleasent. He was riding his Gold Wing today. Beautiful bike.

Well it was worth it today, $96 for gloves to keep my hands from HURTING, and meeting "Motorman" Palladino.

edit: Here is an update on the weather for tomorrow morning:

The National Weather Service is expecting to put up A Wind Chill Advisory from 4am to 9am Tuesday morning.
Due to the strong wind and chilly air, the ‘feels-like’ temps will be in the upper 20s north of Tampa Bay with the rest of the area feeling more like the lower 30s during the early morning hours.

Sound like home trike and Spok??? Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr...

For rides that don't get down around the magic 25 degrees or so I bought some windproof gloves from National Geographic which work great. Flexible and grip well. Price is around $50.

It gets cold in Florida...I saw it hit 19 degrees in Jax and down to 22 in Orlando when I lived there. All the water type heat pumps had all the bushes and shrubs frozen over from the water discharge freezing on them. Was a strange sight in Florida.

Do your hands get COLD AT ALL with these when it's 30-40 degrees out?

Some gloves can keep you warm, until you are moving at 50mph. Then they fail.

Well yeah, they have gortex in them and they say "HARLEY DAVIDSON" Is that cooler??

I've seen gloves from $49 to $89, These are not Gauntlet, but they do have a large opening that goes over your jacket, to keep air from going up the wrist of the jacket.

Similar gloves I've seen at the Kaw dealer fell into the same price range.

One thing I WON'T do is order gloves online, unless I've actually tried them on at a store first. Gloves all fit differently, and the sizes vary a lot. So online deals are pretty much out of the question. I don't want to play the return game on numerous gloves until I find the right one. Something would really have to catch my interest to order a pair online.

Now the sales girl was cute, but she didn't offer any special assistance...

If you're worried about looks, keep the gloves you have, however, any wallyworld has real warm gloves back in the sporting goods in the hunting clothes- now I don't know about FLA, but even Bass Pro or Cabelas has them, we wear them on atv's all winter long and no problems, all for less than $20, just don't buy the orange ones--they may clash with your bike!!! BB

Well at least I didn't spend big bucks on a rainsuit. I did find one at Wallyworld in the sporting goods dept. Only $32 and it works great. Seems like it'll hold up for a long while and boy, when it's cold, it is amazing how it holds in the heat and keeps me warm when worn over my warm weather jacket. I don't even get a chill, at least so far, down to about 50 degrees.

We'll see how it works at 20-30 degrees in the morning.

I'll have to check on the gloves your talking about though.

Why 25? Ran into it on my Alaska trip + it was raining. Didn't have these gloves then, though.
These have held up to it without the rain. I suspect since they're fleece they may hold up wet as well.

I've got a pair of those. They are good down to about 35 degrees, but the quality is crap for the price. Paid 80 bucks for mine and the lining is already tearing out after about a year.

My next pair will be a mitten type that my local indenpent bike shop has. They have the goretex lining with a ballistic type nylon outer shell and leather palm. Only 30 bucks. Serveral riders here have them and say their hands do not get cold at all even down to 20 degrees.

You say they hold up. Do your hands get cold AT ALL? Or are these just the best you've found?

I've found you can have expensive gloves, thick, leather, goretex and still your hands get cold after 10-15 mins of riding on 50 degree weather.

The wind doesn't get through them and I haven't felt cold at all. Again, I haven't gotten them wet, so I don't know about how they'll react under those conditions.

You're kidding right? I ride in 50 degrees without gloves.
