Default Another Newbie with a question.

Hello all,
I have been viewing this forum since September and I must say I have been pleasantly surprised at how informative and helpful a majority of the posts are. I would like to thank you all on making my decision to buy a new Nomad a little easier. I sure liked the look of the bike and finally sat on one on Friday and that was all it took.As I live in the Great White North it will be late April before I get it out of the crate and on the road but I now feel a little more a part of this forum.
My question is to those who have a limited riding season and store their bike in the garage. Does anyone store thier bike on a platform up off of the floor so they don't lose any garage space.I have two sleds and a quad in the garage also and space is at a premium. Can't seem to find any solution on the internet. Thanks in advance.

welcome to the site , i was reading of bike lift's . the lift is bolted to your garage wall & you place your bike onto the lift & raise your bike , up toward the roof & out the way .

I would think you could rig a hoist & pully system in the roof of the garage and hoist it straight up near a side or the back. I've seen lots of boats stored this way.

Just make sure the roof can handle the extra weight before proceeding. There would be nothing worse than having the roof fall in because it's not strong enough.

I am wondering about the strength of the rafters to hold the weight over an extended period of time. It would be a simple solution. Should a guy build a holder for the front wheel or trust the kick stand? Probably easier just to bite it and park the truck outside.

If you build a platform you'll end up with a place to store your bike in the winter and the sleds in the summer. I have a small shop on a platform in my garage and store suff under it. Have to leave some room for a removable ramp.

Good luck with your Nomad.

I found this info on motorcycle storage lift systems on the Internet:

http://www.loft-it.com/

I didn't see any information about pricing, but it looks like what you may be looking for.

This would not be ideal for any type of vehicle with a suspension. The reason being is when a bike or car is suspended by its frame, the suspension is "unloaded" which means not under stress. While this might not sound like a big deal, suspension is meant to be loaded. When you unnaturally stretch your suspension for too long periods of time, it changes the properties of the gases and seals within the shocks, forks, etc. For short periods of time, its not a big deal, but for months during winter hibernation, its not a good idea.

For you, if you want an elevated storage solution, make sure the bike is still sitting on its own weight wherever you put it.

Another tip is to overinflate your tires a bit. Dont go beyond the manufacturers maximum PSI rating for your tire, but a few PSI over your normal driving pressure will ensure that flat spots do not develop where your bike is sitting all that time.

Welcome to the board and congrats on the new scoot. You will love the bike and the board, there's a lot of great people and information here!

Looks along the lines of what I was thinking. I found a site www.rackalot.com but I think it would only work for the sleds. Thanks for the help.

Good catch, Constrictor. I didn't think about unloading the suspension because I was visualizing some sort of platform to tie the bike down to, then hoisting that up. Should have mentioned it.
