Default Garage Door Remote on Your Bike

Soon after getting my 06 Vulcan 900 I started wrestling with how to get a two-code garage door remote control on the bike for gloves-on operation. The hard-wired kits would not work because of coding restrictions at the gate receiver where we live. (Yes, I live in a gated townhouse community, but at heart I'm a rancher.)

With my full-size garage door opener as a starting point, I googled "garage door remote control" or something similar and found that miniature versions of the 2-button remote were readily available for less than $40. Same switches inside for code setting, etc.

I fabricated an aluminum bracket that positions the small remote where I can reach it with my index finger with my hand still on the throttle grip. Next step was to find some high quality clear vinyl material to encase the remote for rain protection, and fasten the whole thing on the bracket with a nylon cable tie.

It works great and unless you're trying to ride a show-bike, the appearance is just fine.

If this is too arcane and someone wants a pic, I can explore how to provide one. Yes, I'm a forum newbie.

Default Pic of Mini-Remote on VN900

Here's a pic of the mini remote for 2 codes, maybe a little out of focus.

I gave up on trying to work my remote while I was gloved, it was buried in my jeans pocket, and the on-coming traffic didn't want to let me turn left into my driveway.

I tend to make things more complex than my wife thinks I should but she still loves me, and really loves the looks of that silver 900.

Thanks with this and the purchase of a smaller soldering iron, I may venture into that tiny circuit board.

I hear that some of the high dollar bikes have a programmable feature like in most recent cars/trucks (cages).

I'll prolly get in trouble for bringing this back but I just had to share. On my 2002 Mean Streak I took off the left side cover below the seat, hooked two wires to elongate the wires that go from the circuit board from the button to a remote button.

I then took a step drill and made a half inch hole in the top part of the panel and mounted a monetary button I got from radio shack. I used double sided tape to mount the remote to the inside of the panel and all that results is a half inch black button you wont even know is there unless you know where to look or I show you. Only drawback is I can't leave the bike outside over night but I wouldn't anyway.

That's exactly what I did, except on the CA models you have to remove the charcoal cannister from the fuel EVAP system.

I keep a small opener inside my windshield bag. As I come down my street about two houses down I can push the button and drive right into the garage and have my 2 year old standing in the doorway waiting for me.

I'm lucky that my garage door remote is small enough to fit in my jean pocket or jacket pocket, If I have the button facing out, I can still press it with my gloves on through the pocket....

That flash opener doesn't seem very secure. I didn't take too long of a look at it, so I may have missed something.

I keep my full-size garage door opener in my ride kacket / right pocket. Simple and it works.
