Default Air Filter Cover blew off while riding

I'm so confused...my 97 Vulcan 1500 Classic recently backfired and the right hand side air filter cover blew off from the pressure. Duct taped it on for the ride home but I'm really confused about something. I can replace the cover and plate but I'm thinking about getting a Hypercharger installed. WHICH SIDE WILL IT GO ON???. If its the right side, then I don't have to spend $120.00 on a new cover that will be replaced. If its the left side, then I have to buy a new one anyway.

Also, is it just me or why does the bike have 2 identical covers on each side but only the left side has an air filter. I just bought the bike a month ago and hate to admit I don't know much about this stuff. Any help would be great. I've read all the threads I can purtaining to Hyperchargers, jet kits for the carb, etc. And, should my carb engine be backfiring all the time? Sounds cool but I don't want to be hurting the engine. Heeeeeeeeeeeeeelp.

Neo, The two identical covers are both part of the air inlet system. The factory put them like that for symmetry. You should search for "scooterized" air intake mods. Much less expensive way to go unless you must have the hypercharger. I also have the 97 1500 classic and I am getting ready to do the "scooterized" intake and reed valve block off plates. The blockoff plates are supposed to remedy the backfiring problem plus clean up some of all the hoses and junk on our bikes. Hope this helps.

I did the block-off (don't forget the marble, too!) on my 1500 and put K&N filters on it. I really like the way it runs now.

I highly recommend going to http://www.gadgetjq.com/gadgetsfixitpage.htm and reading up on the Coyote mod, Coasters and such. You'll be amazed at the amount of info on his site.

Neo,
There`s a lot of info about just what your looking for on the VROC site.
Most will be under different titles then are listed on this site.Check under Coyote kit for the intake mods. and Coasters for the block off plates. I`m with Jukief on the K&N . Put mine on in 1999 with a bunch of other mods and couldn`t be happier. Since you have a 1997 check out the info on the "POG" plastic oil gear. A guy by the name of Judge makes a steel gear "JOG" thats a fairly easy fix.

Thanks all...I will do some research and hopefully get some more choices. The hyperchargers are expensive but I wasn't sure what other options there are. This is really, really helpful. I love this forum!

the air filter is on the left side cover , then there's a plastic tube running between the engine into the right cover that's got the throttle body . both left & right cover are inter connected by the centre plastic tube , the set up is very restrictive . unless you like the look of a hypercharger , you can go baron or thunder air kit's . i recently fitted a "Kury" hypercharger & got the bike custom dyno mapped , the increase in performance is almost like night & day .

I just put on the Baron's Big Air Kit and left the left side clean. I love the way it looks.
