Exclamation Help - cant decide on mods!!

Some of you 800 gurus will already know me from my many posts and questions about my '06 800B. and thanks again for all the great advice.

I know that there is a lot of gains to be made in the performance side of things with pipes, jetting and intake mods (eg RW"s and many others examples). Unfortunately, money was an issue for me and I did the "half-assed" mods - K&N filter in stock airbox, custom made slip on mufflers to my stock headers and a dynojet kit tuned to suit.

Now dont get me wrong the bike goes well, but I still go to bed at night wondering how much better it would be set up perfectly:
  • V&H Cruzers
  • aftermarket / scooterized intake
  • re-jetted correctly

Is this a case of paying a $1000 bucks for the last few HP??? I think mine dynoed at 50hp... (I live in Australia, and pipes / parts are EXPENSIVE!!)... Or are the above mods to get the perfectly set up 800 worth the extra cash???

I haven't ridden a perfectly set up 800 so I don't know what I am missing. and if you think I'm not missing much, then I'd also appreciate to hear it.

Apologies to drag up this debate again, and I really appreciate all your feedback.
Cheers, Dave

Assuming you aren't made of money you can do some of this individually. I'd do the Cruzers first and after the budget recovers do the rest. You may also want to add a new front sprocket to the list. BTW, I had an 800A and can vouch that the Cruzers sound great.

I don't own an 800 but have heard a few of them with the cruzers on and they sounded great!

The sproket change will help with highway cruising speeds so the engine isn't working quite as hard.

I've got the Cruzers on mine. I'm totally pleased with them. They loook and sound awesome, IMO. I've also Scooterized mine using the DynoJet kit needle and the 165 main and 50 pilot jets. I could tell a pretty decent difference. Everything outside of the pipes were fairly cheap -- it did suck to spend $60 for a jet kit to only use the needle from it, but I got over it.

The thing that I like best out of it all is that the bike's cold-bloodedness is nearly completely gone. It's nice to be able to start the bike with minimal to no choke.

My next job to do is to replace the rear sprocket. The 800 and I are hitting Sturgis this year and some lower RPMs on the highway would be nice. I need to get a bike lift first though.

Default re

modding and dressing up bikes is NOT cheap...
is power gain vs dollar spent a value......not usually

it boils down to do you like stock bikes,do they suit your needs?
if not then start emptying those pockets and make the bike your own the way you like it.

rarely can you justify the dollar to horsepower ratio a bargain but if you need to have that to make the bike what you want it to be then its money well spent - it all depends on the person and how bad you have the need for performance and speed

some of us here have even souped-up our vacums, blenders, and lawnmowers
we have it sooo bad-i run a CAI on my john deere lawn tractor for gods sakes

Thanks bikeaholic - what you says makes perfect sense. But going back to my first post - I have already done a few small mods, and the question is would going "all the way" with the mods suggested make all the difference??? Thats whats bugging me.... If money wasn't an issue I would already have done all the mods, but unfortunately my pockets are not very deep but I love my bike - aaahhhhhrgh.

Dave, I don't own an 800 either, but I'd say from reading your first post, that you'd be better off just holding onto the money. If the sound is fine to you, you'll be better off just leaving well enough alone. I don't think you're going to get that much additional performance from the remainder of the mods.

Now get that off your chest and relax.
