I'm curious as to what ya'll would consider reasonable levels of insurance to get on my new bike. I put a policy under Dairyland for the time being without UM/UIM, but one of the drawbacks to them is that they will only do the minimum liability levels for TX which are 20/40/15. And you can only put UM/UIM for levels equal or below the liability levels. Adding a 25/50/25 UM/UIM to any policy I have had quoted will push the cost of the insurance up anywhere from $160 to $250 a year. It's the most expensive part of the insurance by far. My Dairyland agent told me that id I have good medical insurance that UM/UIM is redundant for the bodily injury and that it's also redundant since I have full coverage with replacement cost. I've been reading online that it's best to carry UM/UIM on your motorcycle policy.
Progressive was the next cheapest and with 50/100/25 liability and 20/40/15UM/UIM it was nearly $800 /year. Without the UM/UIM it was $519/yr which was about what the Dairyland would be if I included UM/UIM at equal to the 20/40/15 liability limits. I freakin' hate insurance. It just makes my stomach roll to try and pick what I need. I see everyone getting 100/300. It must just be a N. TX thing or something that the UM is so high. My brother has Dairyland in Kansas City on his '04 Softail with 25/50/25 on everything and his is only $400/yr and he's 6 years younger. I guess I just want to make sure I'm covered and am not quite sure what to look at to make that decision. Any and all advice would be most appreciated. .......Shane |

Thought I would throw in my two cents. Coverage for my 06 900LT is with Geico. Dairyland wanted almost twice as much for the same coverage. All the others were more competitive with Dairyland rather than Geico.
Bodily Injury Liability: $50,000/$100,000 Property Damage Liability: $25,000 Uninsured Motorist BI & PD: $50,000/$100,000 Underinsured motorist: coverage rejected medical coverage carried through employee health plan Comprehensive $250 Ded. Collision $250 Ded. 58 years old, clean driving record, both motorcycle courses taken. Yearly premium: $228 |

I found another Dairyland agent here in town and the only UM/UIM levels I can get are 20/40/15 or 100/300/100, no matter the corresponding liability levels (eg. can't have 50/100 liability and 50/100 UM). With 100/300/100 and 20/40/15 the premium is $600/yr. With 100/300/100 and 100/300/100 it is $700/yr. With Dairyland you cannot remove just the UM property damage. Progressive and every other one we tried was at minimum $200 more no matter the levels.
This agent also told me that most motorcyclists in the area that they insure only do the minimum liability and no UM/UIM coverage if they have good health insurance. I guess I'm thinking more about any short term disability I may have if injured more severely, God forbid, as our st disability at work doesn't kick in for 30 days and only pays $300/week for 9 weeks--then goes to long term at 2/3 salary. Blows my mind that my new 2006 Mustang is less than this bike at the same coverages. Part of it is that the bike is an '07, 1500cc, and I'm 37 years old. I can't imagine that in a year it wouldn't go down some. Last edited by Blooze : 05-01-2007 at 05:34 PM. |
