Default Mounting Tour Pak on 1500 Classic

I bought a tour pak off of an 84 Venture and I want to mount it to my existing F&S luggage rack. The height is perfect and in test fitting it she likes the position of it for comfort. It says a maximum of 5 lbs.. On Gadget's site he's very adamant about buying a rack to mount a tour pak and to not use the existing rack.

However, I weigh in at about 185 and I can put my full weight on that rack and bounce up and down and it doesn't flinch. So my question is, has anyone mounted a tour pak to their luggage rack with deleterious results? Or conversely has anyone done it successfully?

I'm thinking the worst case is my significant other would be propelled off the back into oncoming traffic, but that is worst case scenario!

You gotta love this site sometimes. But then again, maybe everyone is off riding. But to answer your question from my perspective: I highly respect the do's and should nots in Gadget's forum. But then it is your bike too, so do what you think best. I have a Cobra luggage rack on my Nomad and it is rated for nothing over 10 pounds. I may exceed that by approximately a max of 20 pounds but that is about the limit.
If you are going to be carrying some "excessive" loads, I would probably recommend the Wompus rack. From a design standpoint, it looks like it would be my alternative for doing what you want to do.
Whoops, time to go riding....

i would prolly follow gadj's advice....your weight bouncing on it wont really duplicate the stress of a loaded pak and the vibes it will encounter on the road

I don't have the Wompus Rack, but I do have the rack made by Scootworks. I have had it mounted on my bike and a large trunk for over 2 years with no problems. Last year when going to Tennessee, I probably had 75 pounds in or on the trunk.
