Personally, I have a 2 beer maximum when I'm in the car, and a 1 beer max when I ride the bike, I don't avoid bars just because I'm driving or riding, I just don't drink.
I'm man enough to know my limits, I'm responsible enough to set some limits, and I have enough backbone not to succumb to pressure from my peers, and enough self image not to need to be seen as a hard drinking man. If you can't handle not drinking, in a drinking environment, then you have a problem and it would be better if you avoided bars altogether. End of discussion. |

At the weekly bike night, we purposely sit on the elevated deck at the exit. Never fails that someone who has been drinking falls over on their way out. Yes, it's kinda sick, but it's cheap entertainment, and hopefully that person has learned their lesson about riding and drinking.

Thinking that it is OK to drive or ride after having only one or two drinks is like saying it is OK to jump out of a plane with a parachute with only one or two small holes in it. You may be right until that one time you are wrong and there is no going back..

If you go into the store and ask them where their 6-point is, they will point to the deer antlers mounted on the wall

Ok, I'm going against the trend here, but I too like to have a beer on a ride. I never have more than one beer in a bar, no more than 1 in two hours, and no more than 3 in a day. I'm a big guy, this isn't getting anywhere near impairment and it adds a lot of enjoyment. I personally don't drink beer unless I'm doing hard work outside in the sun, riding my bike, or occasionally with pizza-- as these are the only times I like the taste. I don't have to have a beer if I ride, but if I'm going to be riding all day, I sure do enjoy it. Peace.

I'll have one beer. I admit it -- just one. And I'll nurse it the entire time I'm sitting at the bar.
Man, I think back to when I was a kid, though, in my early twenties, which was about 25 years ago. I used to go out to clubs on my bike. Believe me, it's amazing that I'm still here today! Live and learn, I guess.

manuever with various level of alchohol in their system useing a car and motorcycle. I really think the bike would end up getting wrecked a lot quicker because of the balance involved. So there is a level of alchohol where the same person would probably get away with driveing but not rideing.IMHO. It would be interesting to safely find out what that level would be. I remember reading one story where they did that with motorcycles but did not try it with a car. The riders got through it without hurting themselve but did crush some cones. |

Kinda like taking medication and driving? Or like smoking and driving? Or perhaps eating food and driving? How about when you take your child with you and they are acting up, Have you ever looked back at them to reprimand them or say something to them. Hmm, how about adjusting your radio? Hmm,,, look in the mirror at food in your teeth? Put on makeup ( hopefully we're talking women only on that one ). My point is this...... I guarantee that each and every one of us has done at least one of those things. Everytime you do, your putting your life and possibly someone else's at risk. So.. yes drinking excessive amounts of alchohol and driving can be dangerous but there aren't to many states that have a zero tolerance for that, are there? If i want to have 1 beer while on a ride with my buddies i'll do it and shouldn't have to worry about being judged by someone. I never have more than 1 ( EVER ) but there are many times that we go on a ride and stop at a bar and there may be 20 of us and not one will have booze of any kind. Bars do sell pop and water as well. And last time i was there i even noticed food being served. and the funny this is, there has been times where we go on a long ride that may be 2 or more hours and we may stop at a bar and stay there 2 or 3 hours and visit on a nice warm deck in the sun without having a speck of booze. Its called a social gathering and OMG! its at a bar!!!

OK, I've been lurking on the forum for a short while, and this is my first post, but I just had to on this thread.
I also limit myself to either non-alcoholic drinks or just one beer when out riding/driving etc. The comment about the "bad boy" image reminded me of a time when I showed up at a bar, on my bike, to meet some friends. I was the only one that showed up on a bike and I had my full leathers on. At 290 lbs, 6'3", I looked pretty scary. When I sat down at the table, everyone was imbibing in either beer or wine, laughing, and generally being loud and obnoxious. The waiter walks up and asks me "what can I get you?" Obviously, after riding for a while, I was thirsty, so I ordered the first thing that came to my mind.... A nice cold.....Raspberry tea. The place went silent, he looked at me like I had just grown 2 heads. Then everyone started laughing again. Talk about killing the "bad boy" image. My friends still bring up that incident. Ride safe, ride often. Peace. |

Wayyy back one cold night in 1978 I pulled into the parking lot at the local 7-Eleven store on my '75 FLH1200 'Fatbob'. Am 6'3" and weighted around 220-lbs back then. Was clad in full leathers and a black watchcap. The clerk eyed me warily. I was used to getting those kinds of looks and nodded to her. She almost laughed when she saw the items I placed on the counter; a package of oatmeal cookies and pint of milk. FWIW, I usually meet riding buds at gas stations or cafes. We do go to brewpubs for a cold beer *with* lunch, and that's about it. Not into barhopping although there are drinking clubs with a, uh, motorcycle problem: BOISE WEASELS
