Oil Overfill on new VN2000

G'Day,
I am patiently awaiting the delivery of my new VN2000, but was told by the dealer there was a tappet noise when they ran it up and they would have to truck it across town for repair. I have now been told that the apprentice overfilled the oil, and this has resulted in an overflow to the air? filter and resultant smoking. They are now looking to replace the filter and get it back to me. I did read something about this problem in a forum, but can't find it anywhere. Is there anything I should be on the lookout for when I eventually pick it up , or should the removal of some oil and filter replacement fix the issue. Unfortunately, the dealer has not so far filled me with confidence , so I would not like to simply take their word. Regards

Your really having your share of fun. Overfill is common. If you start the bike, idle, check oil and top off. Most of them will way overfill. I think most of us are using change filter,put in 5 quarts, and forget the dipstick. I can check it in the morning before i ride it, shows just barely above the add oil. Some are putting a little more in. Hope that helps and you get to ride soon

Yep from what I hear add 5L- start it up for a while then add .8L more and its perfect. If you don't drain out all of the old oil first or try to add all 5.8L at once then it might get overfilled and start belching oil.

Hey Phat, where did you get that info from? With filter change the spec'd amount of oil is 4.6L or 4.9Q ( so we put in 5 quarts ) some are putting in a little more. No where is it 5.8L ? manual does read 5.5L (5.8 US qt) when "completly" dry. I'm pretty sure if you put in 5.8L after an oil and filter change, you'll have enough oil to cause his problem.

It's a shame to have such confusion on such a simple question

Thanks Guys, I was going to get the dealer to change oil and filter, but with his past history I think I'll do it myself. The confusion over "totally" dry is probably where the "apprentice" went wrong. Looks like 4.9-5 quart with filter change is the right amount. Is there any reason, apart from cost, not to change the oil filter each time you change oil ? This will assist an "engine challenged" individual like myself in reducing any chance of screwing up the bike.

I allways change both, allways did. Try to get the dealer to copy the oil change pages. It's weird as there are three drain plugs. Also be careful there are O rings on i think two of them? And not to overtighten them as they are in aluminum and people often strip them. It's all in the three pages of the manual. Don't be to harsh on the dealer, they are very unlikely to repeat the mistake, and lots of people/dealers have done the overfil


Weird about the Delphi info Phat, i really think thats incorrect info. man, simple issue, complex resolution. Hehe, maybe ma kaw should sort it out and send out and amendum to the owners manual. Should i hold my breath?

typical problem, very easy to do. just have them change the oil/filter/air filter and maybe the plugs if they run it very long.
as for changing the filter very oil change, yes it just covering your a$$
