well

when i was running the stock setup on my 04 1500 classic, i'd get 120-130 before hitting reserve

then i added a K&N filter to the stock airbox and had it rejetted and then I'd get 115-120 before reserve

then i did the caddman airbox mod and had it again rejetted and now I get 110 till reserve (less if I'm riding at 75 or above as it really sucks down the gaz)

Depending on speed and riding style that sounds about right.

Wow. That's not very good range... I almost bought a 1500 and I'd be really irritated if I had to fill up every 1.5 days when commuting...

I ride a 2000 carbed Nomad with Vance and Hines Baggers (no baffles), and a K&N filtercharger.

I get right at 30 mpg riding in town, speeds up to 45 mph. I start thinking about fuel at 90 miles, hit reserve about 95 and usually fuel right at 100. I almost always have around a half gallon of fuel left. I use Chevron's mid-grade fuel, which I think is 90 octane (don't quote me on that I don't pay that much attention to the gas pump).

Highway riding varies quite a bit depending on speed and the ride. I've done as well as 42 mpg on a flat ride where I was able to pretty much set the throttle lock and roll at 55 mph. My last trip from Lewiston, ID to Missoula, MT saw 37 mpg; mostly I'm doing around 65 mph there with some stretches of 75+ mph once I get to the MT side of the hills. The worst I've ever done was 24 mpg. But that was bombing through the Nevada desert at 85+ mph on my way to Las Vegas.

I start looking for gas at 180-200 miles, at 220 it usually takes 4.1 gals to fill so if I was brave I could make 250 on a tank. 07 900 classic

I get 200+ on the V2K before the reserve light comes on, unless I'm riding like a jerk.

On my FI 1500 without a reserve, the fuel light comes on right around 140 miles. Usually only put in 4.1 gallons. Farthest ridden with light on is to 165 and put 4.5 gallons in.

My tank is supposed to hold 5.5 gallons. The most I've added was 5.1 and that was 241 miles. I ride easy. Honestly it isn't so much what you spend over 70mph that adds up but how quickly you get there

Well, we're talking about a carb'd 1500 which means a 4.2 gallon tank, heavier and a bigger engine. Your 900 is lighter, fuel injected, has a bigger gas tank and a smaller engine. The 800's also got excellent gas mileage and they were/are carb'd. After my trip last month I've sworn that I'll get a bike with much better range...someday.

interesting. ill try easing up a bit on acceleration to see if your theory is true.
