Default PhatRiser Question

I just finished installing my PhatRisers today. They look really nice and help me sit a little further back in my new gel seat.

However I was wondering if anyone else found that the risers hang ever so slightly off the front of the triple tree. This bothers me a little because for the money, you would hope they would fit right over where the stock risers fit. Also, because they don't fit right over where the stock risers fit, there are small scratches in the triple tree where the stock risers were located.

Am I being too picky?

I used the center hole when installing the Phatt II's and they sit right in the middle of the tree. As for scratches from the old risers, you should be able to polish them out.

I could have used the other bolts that came with the risers and used the center hole, but they had no head - just a stem. If I did use these, they would have sat square but how do you tighten them down.

Am I just stuck on stupid or something?

Using the center holes on mine, everything lined up perfectly. I used the nuts off the OEM riser bolts. If your OEM's are bolts w/o nuts you can get nuts at any decent hardware store or machine shop.

So I took the Risers off and started over. The larger bolt that fits in the center whole is too large - won't fit through the triple tree. Mind you, I have a VN900 so maybe the larger bikes have a differnet triple tree?

I'll be calling Scootworks tomorrow. I'm a little......hmmmm how should I say this.......*&^%$!! Yeah, that's it.

Woody, you're right. I need to chill out. But I have to put the risers back on my bike and THEN I'll chill out and go for a ride. LOLOL Just frustrated but I'm okay now. Really. Honest.

Appa:
There should have been a bag of hardware with the Phat risers. In the bag are 2 long bolts without a head. The large end of the bolt goes into the center hole of the riser. Next the small end is pushed through the triple tree hole where the old stock risers were (from the top down). The nuts off the old riser bolts will fit the new Phat riser bolts. Just tighten them lightly then put the bars where you want them. and snug those allen bolts up. Next tighten the riser nuts down and your done.
It took me 15 minutes to change mine out. Best way is to remove the headlight so you can get to (and see) the riser stud nuts. Remeber METRIC tools should be used.
I hope this helps you out.

Gonzo - Thank You!! I did speak with Scootworks and they told me exactly what you suggested - use the studs that came with the risers but go at it from top down. I was trying to thread the larger end of the stud through the bottom of the triple tree. Does not work!
I now have them installed correctly and they're working out great!

Thanks for all the help everyone.

I think you must have one of those bogus 900's made in North Korea. The Phat risers worked just fine on mine; center hole, big threaded stud, reused nuts from OEM risers.

Nah - the bike is great. It's the guy trying to install the Risers that's a dope! (me).

But all is well and they fit great. Love em'.

I had new Phat I risers on my doorstep yesterday. I was glad to see this thread because the enclosed 4-5 pages of instructions was getting confusing. I installed them today but had to go out and buy a 6 & 8 mm allen wrench so I sure did not get it done in 15 min like some. As the instructions mentioned it would have been nice to have an extra pair of hands at times.

About 8:30 this evening went out for dinner and put about 20 miles on them. They are doing what I hoped to accomplish in that with my Saddlemen's King gel seat I always felt I was sitting on the edge of it. Now I am leaning back more against the backrest.

At the same time I ordered a Baron's BAK from BTK and as of Friday BTK had not gotten it from Baron's. That should be it forever......ok, maybe this year.

I don't want to think too hard about it, but my guess is that I am up to about $2k in functional STUFF for this bike. Sure had me fooled when I said shield/bags is about all I will need....

SamsClub - I didnt' have to re-route any cables. It was a little tricky to get the socket around the cables when taking off and putting on the nuts, but all in all, it's a pretty install.

Regular Phat's will not require relocating cables to the rider's side of the triple tree, but the Phat II's will. I have regulars, and when the bike is turned left to lock the cables for the throttle and front brake are taut. Have not looked underneath the tank to see if some slack can be found.

If I had a jack I would take off the triple tree and move the cables inboard. Scootworks says you need to take the weight off the front suspension to do this; Kawi factory manual doesn't say one way or another.

When I installed mine (Phat Is) I missed the part on taking out the wire cable guide. Everything was too tight. I had to go back and remove that but was still having issues due to the Memphis shield mount on a hard left turn because the throttle cables dropped over the mount bolt. So I velcroed all the cables together. That fixed it. I did some rub damage to one of the throttle cables but it should be ok.
