Default Roofing nail in drive belt

I was on my way to work all of a sudden i here a loud ticking sound . i pull over and oh goody there is a roofing nail in the middle of the drive belt . i called the stealership to order a new one 390.46 for a 153 tooth belt. i hope there might be a cheaper place to get a stock belt.

Quick search online yields about $350, not a terrible amount of savings, plus a couple bucks for shipping.

Just lookin' at a belt, doesn't seem like they should cost that much.

I thought he needed a 153 tooth? Didn't see a belt listed for the VN2000 on Scootworks site.

Nevermind, looked it up, it is 133 tooth:

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but as long as the hole isn't at the edge of the belt, and the edges are still smooth and not cracked or otherwise compromised, the belt should be good for several thousand more miles. Shouldn't it?

I,m with Todd, I'd ride on it and just keep checking the condition of it.
Now way it's worth $390, they cost about $18 to make and market, but when you need one.......

Either that, or go ahead and buy one, but you don't have to be in a rush.

And in either case, keep this one around in case you need a spare someday.

Check with BTK, they might be able to discount it for you. Most of their stuff is a 15% discount from list for forum members.

That is crazy expensive. I am just wondering how the hell a nail got all the way up into the belt. A new tire is much cheaper then a new belt. Maybe I'll count my blessings and stick with my dirty chain.

That very fact has kept me from buying anything other than the 1600. I just don't like belts.

Also kept me from buying the Victory Jackpot I test rode a few weeks ago. If it had a shaft (or even a chain) it would be in the garage now.

if it wasnt for bad luck i wouldnt have any at all. the nail was in the middle of the belt. the sides are smooth .the nail stuck up through the back side just enough to feel it with your finger. some of it is still in there i couldnt get it out without tearing the belt more . sigh

Hey everyone,
I have always been leary about the belt drive cycles. I was talking
to 2 different harley salesman. They both admitted they do have some problems with them. After reading several posts about the
belt chirping and other problems, I think I will stay with shaft drive.
I am on my second belt drive quad (wich I said I would never own) I had a lot of problems with the 1st one, so far so good with
the 2nd quad, except the clutch is very noisy.
I hope kawi doesn`t go all belt drive.
Happy trails, kurt

Check out these guys...
Rear Drive Belt - 133 Tooth

I see that's already been posted. They've also got a neat air-ride system for a grand.

Service Manual "Periodic Maintenance" page 2-31
"Drive Belt Wear and Damage Analysis
Pattern # 8 (Stone Damage)
Remove stone, O.K. for continued use if not near the edge of belt. Inspect the belt pulley for damage."

The service manual OK's all belt conditions (Internal tooth cracks, scuffing to side of teeth, fraying edge cord, beveled wear, stone and poke-through damage) for continued use. The three it says to replace are Severe external tooth cracks, Severe fractured or missing teeth, and tooth hook wear.
