Default Lowers for the 900LT

Winter is coming soon and I use the 900 every day to commute to work.

On the highway I can feel the wind blowing under the windscreen by the forks and up around the tank past my helmet.

For those who have experience in this matter what lowers would you recommend? What works with the stock 900LT?

My options (I think) are:
Factory lowers
Memphis Shades Universal Lowers w/ 900LT mounting kit.

any others?

And what about the custom lexan lowers that are oversided to be more effective?

Post Coming Winter

Now that winter is just around the corner, I think you will be better off getting yourself a pair of leather chaps. I don't have lowers on my bike and with the chaps on...not even the cold air bothers me. Regards.

Looks like you have everything covered. I am sure you will agree to me, Full face helmet is highly recommended in winter riding. With all your gear, you will not need the lowers for your 900.

Take a look at the Custom World chromed lowers at the Mean Cycle website. That is my bike. I really like the lowers. Not much wind at all. Need to get some chaps for my engine guard tho.

I have the Memphis Lowers for my warm weather riding. I'm having a local glass shop fab up some longer lowers for my 900. We're going to 1st try it with the Memphis brackets. I'll post pics soon.

I just ordered a set of engine guard chaps. I already have the Kawasaki Lowers on my 900LT and wanted to try to avoid the conventional chaps as I am lazy . These are what I ordered:

Airlite Engine Guard Chaps

I'll give an update after they arrive and I've had a chance to test them out.

Also considering the National Cycle Hand Deflectors as my gloves don't keep my hands as warm as I would like on my 35+ mile commute. After awhile the wind chill factor wins over thinsulate. Only problem is they don't list the 900 specifically. After doing some research I've found that the righthand control is the same as the '03 VN1600 Classic which is set N5511. The left hand control is common with the V2K but that model isn't specifically referenced for the hand deflectors. Anyone else install these on a 900?

Hey Mark, Which lowers did you go with from Kawasaki? I see two different prices but the lowers look exactly the same. Any idea what the difference is. How do you like them, and how do they fasten to the bike? Do they hook to the mounting hardware for the windshield, or around the fork tubes?

Thanks,

I have the Kawasaki ones which are designed for the V2k. They attach to the mounting hardware for the windshield. They don't bolt up exactly correctly but I got them on Ebay for $20.00 and they work fine for me. Kid of on the small side though.

I have the memphis shades lowers on order for my 900 classic and should be getting them sometime next week. I am looking forward to being a little warmer on my rides as the temps are dropping but the main reason I am getting them is to keep my head from shaking so much. I dont know about you others with 900's, but when I am going 65-70 my brain starts getting rattled. I know it is coming from under the windshield because when I put my left hand up to block the wind it is MUCH nicer. I wear a full face helmet (which probably makes the wind buffeting worse).

I am going to install the lowers when I get them but will modify them (read: make them bigger) if they are not doing the job.

Well, I do have to agree with Stormcrowe, If I can feel the wind blowing up from under the windscreen then there is a problem that needs to be addressed.

So I went to MeanCycles and ordered the memphis shades lowers as well.

So we will both be testing to see if it reduces the wind blow-by.

I have both engine guard chaps and custom Lexan lowers I made myself for less than $20 and about two hours worth of my time. I first bought the stock lowers for my Vulcan 2000, but they really didn't do much so I fabbed up the lowers shown below and bolted them to the stock lowers mounting hardware. You can see the difference in size between the homemade lowers and the stock ones in the bottom photo. With the combination of the lowers and the engine guard chaps I can cruise along at 80+ mph in complete comfort.

I had the Memphis lowers and thought they worked really well with my Memphis Fats shield. The problem I had is that one of my fork covers is not tight and after awhile the wind pushed it out of alignment. So I would then have to pull it forward. I figured after some time it would only get worse so I sold them. I have noticed that the lowers for the older VN1500s is a heavy wire that attaches to the lower triple tree. I know Spok has them and the next time I see him I want to take a closer look to see if I could make them work on the VN900. I know the screws that it attaches to are not in the same location on the two bikes.
