Default Pro-tac driver backrest for 900LT

I have been thinking about my options for a driver backrest. Of course, they can be had from Mustang and Corbin for a PRICE. Another alternative that I had several years ago on a '96 Honda Magna 750 was a Pro-tac backrest. After checking their website and not finding anything for a 900, I gave them a call. Harold, the owner and a guy I remember talking to before, said that they are making one for the 900LT, but they don't suggest it for the Classic (the brackets for the leather bags that come on the 900LT apparently hide the mounts for the Pro-tac, while the straight Classic would show the less than gorgeous brackets).
I asked him if the backrest was workable with Leatherlyke bags, which I have. He said that for years their backrests didn't work with Leatherlykes, but with the 900's the brackets are different and that he thinks they work with Leatherlykes. Obviously people with 900LT's aren't going to have Leatherlykes, but when Harold said the Pro-tacs only work with LT's, he really meant that the brackets need some kind of Saddlebags to hide the brackets. So, I think I am going to order the Pro-tac backrest and try it. I may have to order from Leatherlyke the longer studs they have available (in case you want to install a passenger backrest/luggage rack). I will advise how I do with the installation.
The Pro-tac driver backrests aren't as attractive as some of the pricier alternatives, but I felt in the past they were well worth the money ($135 for the 900)

This looks like it is an old thread but, I'd be interested in seeing how the backrest looks as well.

No, I never did get the Pro-tac for the 900. I went without a backrest until I traded the bike a couple weeks ago (for a '08 Yamaha V Star 1300). Good luck in your search for a lower cost backrest.

Default order for pro tac backrest

called the company and ordered up a backrest for my 900 with leatherlyke bags on it and the kawa gel seat, harold said the new brackets he makes are great for the leatherlykes on the 900 so here we go, it should be here in a week or so and I will post a report on the fit and finish, oh they will stud the backrest for 10 bucks sound like a bunch of fair guys.

I meet a guy that put a backrest on his 900. There is one major flaw with the setup. To remove the seat he has to remove the backrest which is attached will bolts. I would hope if the backrest attaches to bag mounts that you don't have to remove the bags to remove the backrest. That would be a PIA to do that every time you wanted to remove the seat. Say to use the helmet lock.

Sounds like to me it is not a well designed aftermarket product. From your description, the backrest appears to be mounted exagerately forward leaving almost no seat space for the passenger to seat on. One is better off with a Kawa brand or anything other than pro-tac.

I installed the Pro-tac backrest on my wifes 900LT last summer. It sit too far forward, so I had to redrill the mounting holes to sit it back some. It works good, and she likes it. By the way, to remove the backrest, you just have to pull it up and it comes out of the mounting bracket if you want to take the seat off. I sent a email to the Pro-tac comapny, telling them about what I had to do to make it fit, and they asked me to send them a picture so they could see what I had to do. I've had Pro-tac's on a couple of my bikes in the past, and they work really well for the price.
