Default Throttle cable adjustment

So I was flipping through my shop manual this evening to see where this fuel hose connection is that I need to check, and I happened upon the adjustment procedure for the throttle cable. I just messed with this when I put my grips on a few weeks ago, so I read through it. When I put the grips on, I pretty much just turned the adjusters out enough to give the right amount of play (2-3mm), and didn't pay much mind to how.

So I decided to try to readjust the cable per the manual's procedure, and maybe it's just me, but it seems impossible. The manual says to start with both adjusters all the way in so you have a lot of play. Ok, check. Next, it says to turn out the decelerator cable to take out all the play. Okay. Finally, it says to turn out the accelerator cable to somehow add back 2-3mm of play. This is where they're losing me. Once you take the play out with one cable, turning the other is just binding up the mechanism, and making the cables fight each other. You can't "add back" the right amount of play. I finally gave up and just put it back like I had it. It works fine, but things like this just irritate me. Am I reading something wrong or is this procedure wrong?

i just changed out my handle bars last week and was adjusting my grips and came upon the same conclusion..it must be a error in the manual because i could not get there method to work

You' re trying too hard.

Adjust the deceleration (bottom) cable until you remove the play almost completely. At this point, if you try to accelerate, there is a lot of play before the throttles open. So now adjust the accelerator (upper) cable until there is only 2-3 mm play in the acceleration direction. The idea is that the lower cable needs to be able to close the plates completely, and there needs to be a little play in the upper cable so that turning the fork doesn't rev the engine.

Hope this helps...

Cheers!

John

The return cable is supposed to be just a "back up" to pull the throttle closed if the throttle springs don't. Of course, don't try this at home, it's not what the book says.
Is it possible for you to post without sarcasm? Because it certainly seems like it's not. Regardless, it is neither appreciated nor required. I said it was working fine the way I had it, and was just curious whether anyone else had found the procedure in the manual to be incorrect.

Yes, the manual could be written better. I think the reason why it said to keep the decel cable tight first is that... Once the decel is tight, next time to adjust the cables, I can only tighten the accel cable only.
Seems that you straightened everything out fine. Enjoy the ride!!!
