Hey everyone, new to the forum and looking to unload on a kawasaki. I am coming off a CBR 600 and looking for a cruiser. I am 28 so not quite ready for the cross country cruisers just yet. Mostly in town riding and a few poker runs a summer. There will be a few times where I will take the wife along (I am 6ft 160lbs she is 125lbs) but more than likely it will be just me. I love the look of the meanie as well as the 900 Custom. I have sat on both but dealerships around me will not allow test rides so sitting on them is all I have to go on. Basically what it will come down to is insurance cost. I have a had a clean record for 7 years. If I go with a meanie it will more than likely be used. What kind of insurance are you paying (ballpark) for your Meanie or 900 Custom? I am in Ohio so probably will just be a 9 month policy. Thanks for any help.

That is hard to say in terms of precise costs. But I will say that the Meanie usually costs more than the 900 Custom...except that your Meanie will be used, and therefore have a lower book value than a brand-new 900 Custom.
Best bet? Do not be afraid to phone your insurance agent for a quote BEFORE you buy anything. Any insurance agent worth their salt (read: any insurance agent worth giving your money to) should quote you rates before you make a purchase. If they are unwilling to give you a rate quote prior to forming a contract with them...look for another insurance agent, that's for sure. |

Get quotes on both. Insurance is so variable that anything anyone on here tells you is going to be wrong. I would expect the MS to be higher, but maybe not enough to be significant to you.

Compared to your CBR, either will seem like pocket change when it comes to insurance rates.
My 90 ZX-10 (read: 18 year old bike, with liability only) still costs more to insure than my 03 Meanie with full-coverage. I don't think I pay any more the $200 a year for the Meanie (the wife pays the bill). So 900 or Meanie, shouldn't be a drastic price differance. Cruisers are cheap to insure.

As for which to buy? Both are nice bikes BUT....
Coming from the CBR, the Meanie is gonna feel more natural to you than the 900, when railing through the twisties. It is the sportiest handling cruiser on the market. No, it's not gonna hang with the crotch-rockets up a canyon road, but its gonna out handle any other cruiser. The 900 though, will probably be more comfortable for a passenger. The pillion seat on the Meanie might as well be for show only. It's the size of a postage stamp, hard as a rock, and only the really short will find the leg position remotely comfy. Not sure how the pillion seat on the 900 is though. Talk to Greenie, he just traded his 900 for a Meanie, if I remember correctly. He might be able to compare the two for you.

The Mean Streak handles very nicely...and better than the 900 especially at low speeds where my custom felt a tad wobbly with the thin front tire. The top end is what I like best. The Meanie pulls all the way to 100mph without breaking a sweat...the 900 was screaming and shaking like mad over 70mph. The only thing I do not like about the Meanie and it is a minor nit is the shaft heave that the meanie has when accelerating hard between 1st, 2nd, and sometimes 3rd gear. Eventually (maybe next year) I am going to trade up again to either a V2K or a Raider. Both are belt drive. Yes, I'm obsessed.

Never mind the insurance. When I was riding my 900 Custom with Kerrdj (1600 Meanstreak), and we both rolled on the throttle in 5th gear, he was like gone, man. Get the biggest bike and worry about the insurance later! I am sure it will be less costly than the CBR.
