If you are starting early in the day, have a couple layers , and leave room in the bags for some of it to come off as the day warms up.

I took rain gear, leatherman, small flashlight, small bottle of sun screen, tire repair kit (CO2 type), small bottle of lens cleaner and cloth for sunglasses and helmet shield for those really big bugs. If I have my windshield on I make sure I have a allen wrench to fit it. I also always try to take a few tie wraps and half roll of electrical tape. I also try to take a pair of MX gloves for when it rains so I can keep the leather one's dry.

The most important items are gear, gear and gear. We take several long trips (>1000 miles) each year and find that we need a couple changes of clothing max, RAIN GEAR regardless of the forecast, light weight clothes for layering, leathers for higher elevations, windshield is a MUST.
You will need very few tools.... how much repair do you intend to do? I have never carried or needed a tire repair kit. I do carry small Maglite, siphone hose, small jumper cable set, few tire wraps, essential allens, smallest, lightest 8,10,12mm combo wrenches, multitool. small cresent, small can of car polish to clean windshield and bike. Pledge sucks for cleaning your bike on the road!

I would suggest that you lay out all the clothes you want to take......then remove half of them!
As long as you have a spare set of clothes, (ie: jeans and sweater) and a few pairs of socks, undies and some shirts you are good to go.
Rain gear is a must, as is a basic toolkit, and first aid kit.

If I have learned anything over the past few years touring around it is that people take way too much clothing with them. If you find you need an extra pair of socks......find a Wal-Mart.

And have fun, lots of fun.

Oh yeh, take a spare key and safety pin it to the inside of the inside pocket of your bike jacket.

Also, I found what i believe to be the perfect all weather jacket... it's not leather (it's textile) but it sure is versatile. It has multiple removable layers. A "warmth" layer and a "water proof/wind breaker" layer. If you take out all the inserts it is very light weight and can be used in 90 degree weather because it is perforated to allow the air to flow through it.
