Unhappy VN900 Starting takes 2 Times

Just wondering what everyone else thinks... My 900 Custom takes about 2-3 attempts to start from a cold start. Since it is FI, it has no choke... and when I try to start it I even roll on the throttle a little bit. It still takes 2-3 to start. This never happened on previous bikes I've ridden. Does anyone else have this problem? Should I get this checked out?

Three stupid questions I'll get out of the way...
1. do you allow the FI a couple seconds to prime before hitting the starter?
2. have you tried starting it without twisting the throttle?
3. what is the setup/map on your power commander?

Not being a smarta$$, but they are all important with FI

1. Yes... I wait until its done making that electronic noise each time I attempt
2. Yes I have and its the same
3. I dont know, but this happened previously before I got the power commander

Thanks for the response

When I start mine I wait till it's primed, press the button for 3 seconds and she is running. Maybe your not holding the start button long enough.

The only time my bike hasnt started on the first time was when i accidentally twisted the throttle for a few seconds and then tried starting it. I gave it a few minutes, came back and it started up perfectly.

Thanks Johnny... Maybe thats what it is. I wait until it's primed, but maybe I'm not pressing the button for long enough... i though I was. I'll go check it out and post my results. I hope it works.

Thanks Clarkey... It's just so weird because I've never had this problem with the Honda Shadow 750 or the Harley 883.

My 900 usually started every time.

My Duc is fuel injected and needs a cold start lever (think choke for FI...) to start when it's not 70+ outside. Victory's are the same way.

The only other simple thing I can think of is the idle setting...if it was set really low it might make it hard to start... maybe...

even in the winter when it's really cold and the bike hasn't run for a week or so mine starts up pretty quick, just a couple revolutions and shes running,

so yeah... if it's not anything already mentioned, twer it me I'd be getting it checked out.

the funny thing about that is, my GF has the shadow... while she's still fiddle fartin around with choke settings the 900 sitting there purring along waiting to go.

Once it's set up right you will love the FI starts, especially in cold weather.

good luck, hope it was something easy...

One of the most intelligent responses I have hear on this forum, I mean that honestly, presents a direct without "being a smarta$$" response.

My hat is off to you for your efforts to help. THANK YOU!!! Sorry the reply just hit me in the right spot..........hicup, hicup!!!!!!

FI requires a little more sequencial thought process than carbed. I have the same problem with my 1500 FI and the Idle has a lot to do with it.

Lots of luck you have a great bike, been there done that

+1 on hitting the starter button before the tach finishes making the sweep and all the bells and whistles stop. Try it and get back when you can.

My 900 was definately harder to start with the power commander fitted. Today I removed my pcIII and now she starts 1st pop and seems to be running very nicely.
