How do you put so many miles on in a day? How many hours is that? Is that open roads at pretty high speed? Do you only stop for gas and hop back on and keep going? It's always amazed me how people can do that kind of distance in a day.

We're getting ready to do a trip to Niagara Falls for our anniversary. According to google maps, it's about an 11 hour drive (avoiding highways- taking back roads to enjoy the scenery) and is about 450 miles. We're splitting it into 2 days so we can take our time and be well rested. It could be a 1 day ride but we figure why push it.

You cant generalize a physical condition by your own experiences. Thats like telling someone that is left handed they just havent used their right hand long enough to get used to it.

I personaly dont like my stock seat and will be getting a Kaw gel one soon. After about 30 minutes my tail bone is really sore. I think the main reason for this is that since im in fairly good physical shape I dont have much meat back there. The bone is right on the seat so to speak.

Deeppurple52... nearly every post of yours I have read is a statement of how the stock bike is perfect. If you are happy with your bike as is then thats great! Some of us though are inclined to tinker with it and make it more to our personality or taste. This includes scootworks pulleys, air intake mods, different exhausts, seats, or whatever the next innovative biker comes up with.

Why does it go against your grain so much that some riders like to customize their bikes?

My wife and I both have stock seats (1600 & 900) and have had stock seats on all of our other bikes and we do not feel much discomfort. After putting in 430 miles this weekend, I asked her about the 900 seat... no problem. I put in 804 miles on the 900 last Wed with no problem. We ride every day and about 2000 miles/month so our buns are well conditioned to being on a bike. I imagine many of the lower time riders have a difficult time with more than an hour in the saddle since it does take a while to condition your body. So, the question is: Is the numb butt you feel from a bad seat or lack of seat time?
Boy, I bet you guys' tight buns look great!

Sorry....just couldn't resist. sometimes things just send me on a tangent!

As for the seat, I'm still doing stock too and have never had a problem. I've done days from 300 to 1000 and down there has never been the primary concern. However, on my 650, I'll have to say that the seat is not very kind. In fact, I will likely get a corbin for it. my butt was tender for 4 days after getting home from the 4 day trip I just did.

I put on 2000 miles last year, riding pretty much everyday of the summer/fall and every freaking day, my bum was numb after 30 minutes. When I first modded the stock seat and took it apart, it's clear why a lot of people get numb butt. There's a section of the base plate that's at the wrong angle for your bottom. After the stock foam warms up and squishes down, your butt hot spots are digging right into this angle and voila. Numbness.

If you notice the bottom of the Mustang seats, the seat pans are flat where your butt hot spots are. And the foam is a little stiffer.

If you dont get numb butt from the stock seat, you are very lucky and gifted.

There's sore, and then there's numb. Two different things. I get this too from bicycling.

msh... T wasn't trying to go against the grain. Stock is not always perfect but the common thread here when some inquires about bike A or B is to immediately tell them to get a new seat because the stocker sucks. Everyone is different. I would not suggest that someone change seats without seeing how the original works. My thread had nothing to do with stock is better. We were simply discussing how long it takes to get your butt acustomed to riding. Body types and riding styles differ, so, if your case dictates a new seat, by all means get one. Most folks modify their bikes... we all do it at one time or another, but there are two sides to every issue.

DanL... Whoo Hoo sounds like a great trip! When you get back, let us know how it went. I suspect you will find that 450 is a fairly pleasant ride.... except for the Monkey Butt! Enjoy the ride and Happy Anniversary!
To answer your question: As long as the ride is enjoyable, I ride. When I'm hungry, I eat. When I need rest, I rest. When I have to go... well, I go. Dang! I sound like Forrest Gump. I don't push very hard on the road. I usually ride about 2-2 1/2 hours (150 - 175 miles) at the speed limit then and stop for gas and refreshments. I always stop if I feel drowsy or distracted. We stop frequently along the way for pictures. On very long rides, I generally take about an hour break at the 3/4 point. a long ride is much easier on the bike than in a car.

So you rode 13-14+ hours straight non-stop in a single day and never once had a tired bum? You're not a seasoned rider, you're a cyborg from the future and I will not let you kill John Connor so you may enslave the human race in the future!

You are way off base there buddy. I gots LOTS of padding back there and NONE of it is in the right place for the stock seat.

Anyone remember the first week of summer out of school and how your butt would ache, for the first week anyways?

I did an iron butt ride and didn't have a problem at all with the seat. My butt ain't "thick" either. I just think it's a preference thing. Honestly, I'm puzzled when someone complains about their seat just because I have never experienced it and don't really understand what their problem is. it's not that it's their fault or anything, just different. Now, on my 650, it's completely different. The lack of thickness on my butt DOES cause me problems in that case, and I plan to get a corbin for it.

I'm hoping the Mustang seat with the drivers backrest I just put on will get me through without much MB. I had a gel seat, it looked great on the bike and was much better than the stock seat (this is on my suzuki), but after 2-3 hours you were ready to take a long break.

DanL... Consensus is that the Mustang is the best out there. With a back rest you should be riding in style... and comfort.

You're probably right NCDave. 10 years of powerlifting and a butt built from squats and deadlifts doesn't help!
