I've never added more than 3.4 gallons in a filling even though the
tank supposedly holds 4.5. I've never run it dry but based on the miles I think I've been close. Is this what most of you experience? Thanks, Richard |

I've found the same thing. Once last summer I decided to flirt with fate and ride for quite a while once the low fuel light came on. I chickened out and ended up putting 4.1 gallons in. I'd really like to see how far I could go, but the Meanie is heavy and I really don't want to push her. Maybe I'll carry a fuel bottle and "experiment" with it this year.

That is exactly the same range I have found with my 08 MS. Anywhere between 3.2 an 3.7 depending on how long I want to see the yellow light. And I do fill it past the bottom of the cup if I will be putting some miles on it before it is parked.

Your light comes on way early.
1. Purchase small camping fuel bottle at sporting goods store. 2. Run bike until lite comes on and note miles. 3. Run until bike quits... no it won't hurt it.... note miles. 4. Pour in contents of fuel bottle (Mine is 20 oz). 5. Ride to gas station and fill tank as always. Now you will know exactly how much useable fuel you have. If you fill the tank about 1/2 way up the cup it will hold more than advertised. From empty to where I normally fill my 1600 requires 5.5 gallons (5.3 g. tank)

my light comes on way too early, it's hardly any use. I've run mine out once, unexpectedly, in traffic. It wasn't fun, I don't advise it, without the backup bottle that is.

Tom.... We're talking about a gas tank. If you want to know what your tank holds...well, find out. If you don't care, well that's okay too.
